So so pretty

Liang Metanduno cave on Muna, a tropical island off southeastern Sulawesi, Indonesia, is filled with prehistoric paintings, but one stands out in particularโ€”a claw-like hand stencil that's at least 67,800 years old. Archaeologists, including National Geographic Explorer Maxime Aubert, believe the stencil is the oldest rock art attributed to modern humans and doesn't just reveal insights into early human intelligence, but prehistoric life in the Indonesian archipelago, and migration to Australia too.

In the sunlit pine forests and mountain woodlands of western North America, this flame-faced traveler moves through the canopy with easy confidence. It feeds on insects, berries, and soft fruits, shifting its diet with the seasons as it migrates between breeding and wintering grounds. What makes it extraordinary is its adaptability โ€” thriving from deep forests to backyard trees, it helps regulate insect populations while stitching distant habitats together through its long journeys. Bright as a spark against green needles, a lively messenger of changing seasons.

In the sunlit marshes and shallow wetlands across the world, this bronze-sheened wanderer moves with fluid elegance through still water. It probes soft mud with its long, curved bill, drawing out insects, crustaceans, and hidden invertebrates with practiced ease. What makes it extraordinary is its quiet adaptability โ€” thriving across continents and seasons, it helps regulate wetland food webs wherever floods and tides create life. Dark in form yet luminous in light, a graceful sentinel of living marshes.

In the sunlit river corridors and open woodlands of the Americas, this scarlet spark perches in plain view, impossible to overlook. It launches in quick aerial bursts to sn**ch flying insects, returning to the same lookout with effortless precision. What makes it extraordinary is how boldly it brings color to everyday landscapes โ€” thriving near fields, towns, and waterways, it keeps insect populations in check while lighting up the air with flashes of red. Brilliant, confident, and endlessly watchful, a living ember on the wing.
