Saving the Last of the Peat Forests :
Despite being accused of being responsible for large-scale , an paper company is protecting and restoring the last of the lowland peat forests. The Kampar peninsula in the of in Indonesia contains one of the last lowland tropical peat of the world. This region is also one of the key centres for Indonesia’s infamous palm oil and paper . is the largest palm oil producer in the world and one of the largest paper producers in the world. The paper production company Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings (APRIL) is one of the biggest players in this business, with 4,55,000 hectares of plantations. Since 2013, they have setup the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), an restoration initiative in the province, where they are helping restore 1,50,000 hectares of degraded peatland forests. While the largest land area in the province is still dedicated to plantations, in the restored and conserved peatland forests, is returning. Official in-charge of RER have found that the protected forests here are home to 48 globally endangered species, including the elusive Sumatran Tiger. They have also identified 718 plant species, 300 species of birds, 89 species of fish and 107 species of amphibians and reptiles. “Our hope it to continue protecting and restoring these forests so they can be returned to their former glory,” says Brad Sanders, head of operations, RER.
