Every diver has a shop they "just need one thing" from.

No diver has ever actually left with one thing.

Tag the one who's done this in the last month. πŸ‘‡

Technical training was never about going deeper.

It's about five specific failures, and what you do in the ninety seconds after one starts.

Recreational training teaches you to enjoy the water. Technical training teaches you to survive it when a system you depend on stops working β€” at a depth where going straight up isn't an option.

Five failures: gas, loop, ceiling, team, and the one nobody puts on the list. You.

The most likely broken component on any technical dive is the diver.

Save this. Which of the five would you be least ready for? πŸ‘‡

Footage that never got its own post, because none of it happened in one dive.

A manta. A turtle. A wall of jacks breaking at the surface. A jellyfish in water that looked nothing like the reef an hour earlier.

This is closer to what a season of diving actually looks like than any single clip ever is.

Follow for more of what usually stays off the feed. 🌊

Most divers check one thing before a dive: the weather.

I check five β€” tidal rate, thermocline depth, moon phase, wind direction, recent rainfall. Each one changes what the dive actually looks like, and together they turn "probably fine" into an actual go or no-go call.

This is a method, not a destination guide. It works on any coastline on Earth.

Save this before your next dive trip, wherever it is.

The buddy check takes 90 seconds. Most pairs give it 20.

It isn't a formality β€” it's the last moment someone looks at your configuration with fresh eyes before the water stops forgiving small mistakes.

This carousel covers what the check actually catches: gas verification, buoyancy function, releases and weights, the final okay before entry. Plus the case nobody trains for β€” what changes when your buddy's on different equipment entirely.

Do it properly. Not because an agency requires it, but because it's what you do for the person you're diving with.

Save this. Send it to whoever you dive with next.

None of what's on these slides came from a course.

Every certification teaches you the same baseline β€” the stuff that keeps you alive and legal. Nobody teaches you the five small things that make a trip actually run smoothly, because those only show up after you've been caught without them once.

This is that list. Learned the slow way, so you don't have to.

Save this. What's in your bag that isn't on any list? πŸ‘‡

Every certification unlocks somewhere new. Rescue Diver unlocks nothing β€” no new depth, no new environment.

It's also the only one I use on every single dive.

The course that changes the least about where you can go changes the most about how you get there.

What certification actually changed how you dive? πŸ‘‡

Chilika doesn't fit neatly into any one category, which might be exactly why it gets skipped.

It's brackish β€” part river, part sea, part its own thing. It holds the largest population of Irrawaddy dolphins found in any lagoon on Earth. And its fisheries support the livelihoods of over 200,000 people living around it.

Ask someone what Chilika is known for and you'll hear "birds." True, but incomplete. File it under wetland, and the water story underneath β€” the dolphins, the fishery, the seagrass β€” gets left out entirely.

The boring version of this story: I checked a battery percentage and didn't like the number.

No emergency. No failure. Just a backup display under 10% charge, on the one dive I'd spent months building toward.

I could have gone anyway. The unit works fine without it. I didn't, because "could" isn't the bar on a course like this.

A week's delay for one number on a screen. I'd make the same call again.

Tag the diver whose equipment tests them at the worst possible moment. πŸ‘‡

Even the scientists who catalogue India's coral reefs treat this one as an afterthought.

Every major checklist names four systems: the Gulf of Mannar, the Gulf of Kutch, Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Malvan isn't one of them β€” it gets filed separately, as one of the smaller reefs mentioned almost in passing.

A reef complex enough to need real protection, and it barely makes the footnotes.
