From the rain‑soaked ridges of the Himalayas, a male Satyr Tragopan rises above the valley, claiming his domain with wing‑slapping vigor and a blaze of crimson plumage. His dazzling colors and postures cut through the heavy clouds and cold, a fleeting spectacle revealed only in a rare window of clarity. After long hours of waiting in rain and mist, this moment felt like pure fortune — a brief, electrifying glimpse of territorial pride and wilderness majesty.

In the mist-draped slopes of Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary, Upper Zuluk, Sikkim, a male musk deer stands gracefully upon rugged rocks beneath towering pine trees. Its form blends almost seamlessly into the wilderness, camouflaged against the forested backdrop, embodying the quiet spirit of these Eastern Himalayan hills.
This poised presence is more than a fleeting sight — it is a living emblem of resilience and mystery. With its canine-like teeth signaling readiness for the breeding season, the musk deer becomes a sentinel of fragile montane ecosystems. Protecting this elusive creature means safeguarding the soul of Pangolakha’s wildscape, where every shadow, tree, and stone carries the essence of life.

🌍 Earth Day 2026 🌍

High above the rugged peaks of Ladakh, the bearded vulture soars — a symbol of resilience, freedom, and the delicate balance of our planet’s ecosystems.

Known as the “bone breaker” and nature’s recycler, this rare raptor keeps mountain habitats clean and thriving. Its survival depends on fragile ecosystems we often overlook, reminding us that every species plays a vital role in Earth’s health.

On this Earth Day, let’s celebrate not just the landscapes we admire, but the creatures that sustain them. Protecting habitats like Ladakh means safeguarding the future of these winged guardians — and, ultimately, our own.

The Eurasian lynx is known for its elusive nature, and spotting one at Warila Pass in Ladakh was extraordinary. Their balancing gestures while scent-marking are part of territorial behavior—using body language to communicate dominance and presence in rugged terrain. Warila Pass itself, at over 5,300 meters, is a harsh, high-altitude environment, so seeing such a predator adapt and move gracefully there highlights its resilience.

Beautiful Fishing Cat in the Mist: A Sign of Coexistence

In January 2026, a DSLR camera-trap captured a subadult fishing cat over three consecutive nights—a rare and remarkable sight that speaks volumes about its thriving condition. Once, these vulnerable state animals of West Bengal faced hostility and survival threats due to human intolerance. But through the collaborative efforts of Nature Environment and Wildlife Society, the leadership of Monoranjan Mallik, and the growing awareness among local communities, attitudes began to change. Fear gave way to fascination, and acceptance replaced conflict. The presence of healthy subadults in photographs is a powerful sign: it means the fishing cats are finding the resources they need and experiencing fewer disturbances in their fragile habitats. Today, while villagers are still surprised to see adult fishing cats wandering nearby, their movements are met with curiosity and joy. This transformation shows that with knowledge, awareness, and collaboration, we can not only safeguard the fishing cat but also ensure the survival of countless other wildlife cohabitants who share these ecosystems.

I am thankfull to Monoranjan Mallik, NEWS team, Anidya Bannerjee, Avishekh Deb Roy, Mainak Kumar Das and Vipin Sharma.

Nature has always gifted us with its bounty and resources, revealed through seasonal variations and diverse offerings. These gifts are not limited to us alone — they sustain countless other lifeforms as well.

For the past 11 years, I have been documenting this major wetland, and in these photographs I present the monsoon condition of the Bortir Bill wetland area. Farmers’ fishnets here tell a story of resilience. Day after day, they remain busy catching fish, and even after years of degradation, the wetland continues to provide them with plenty to consume. The catch is stored for regular household use and also sold in local markets, forming a vital part of their livelihood.

During the monsoon, however, survival becomes more challenging for lesser mammals such as the Marsh Mongoose (Atilax paludinosus). Along the Noai river’s edge, this predator thrives by seizing Spot‑fin Swamp Barb (Puntius sophore) left behind in fishermen’s nets. With this easy catch in its grasp, the mongoose flourishes year‑round, becoming a living thread woven into the delicate fabric of Bortir Bill’s fragile ecosystem.

We must protect this wetland. It not only provides nature’s bounty for us, but also serves as a key habitat supporting countless other lifeforms and the intricate balance of ecology.

With in couple of months this place which was a small pocket habitat of Kans grass for these Golden jackals, forced to forage in piles of plastic waste, is a heartbreaking reminder of how our negligence reshapes wildlife behavior. Once thriving in wetlands and grasslands, jackals are now scavenging through garbage dumps, swallowing synthetic debris along with food scraps.

This is not just about one animal—it’s about the collapse of natural habitats into polluted “pocket zones.” Every discarded bag and wrapper becomes a silent trap for biodiversity. Protecting jackals means protecting ecosystems, and it starts with responsible waste management and community action.

Let these images be a call to act: reduce plastic use, demand better waste disposal, and restore habitats before more wildlife is lost to our trash.

During my last safari in Tadoba, I had an incredible encounter with a pack of Asiatic wild dogs, also known as dholes (Cuon alpinus). The morning started quietly—I caught a distant glimpse of a lone dhole through the trees, barely visible. But the afternoon brought a stroke of luck. It was a scorching summer day, and the entire pack came down to the lake to drink water. Just as we were passing by, they crossed right in front of our vehicle. It was a rare and beautiful moment—to see the whole pack together, so close. I was fortunate enough to take some photos and truly soak in the wild harmony of the forest.

Thanks to Wandervogel Adventures and Natures Sprout for all the arrangements and supports as always.
