Navratri Day 9:

Devi Siddhidatri- The one with special powers.

Siddhi means ‘supernatural power’ and Datri means ‘giver’. So Siddhidatri means ‘the giver of supernatural powers.

After Adishakti created the universe. Shiva prayed to her ‘O Supreme Goddess, Grant me all the siddhis to make me a perfect god.’

He mediatated for thousands of the years. Impressed by Shiva’s devotion the goddess appeared in the avatar of SIDDHIDATRI.

With the gratitude of Goddess Siddhidatri, Lord Shiva attains the half body of Goddess Shakti that is why Lord Shiva is also known as “Ardhanarishvara”.

Just as she lives within human, she began living within Shiva too as his SHAKTI. And in this unique way, she bestowed siddhis on him and made him a perfect god.

Siddhidatri represents ‘Adbhuta Rasa’ (Wonder)

Navratri Day 8-Maha Gauri

As pure as Nature.

Due to her glow and extreme radiance, Maa Parvati came to be known as Mahagauri.

Parvati was doing Tapasya. She refused to eat or drink anything, while also fighting through the cold, the rains and the storms. She turned extremely pale and thin. Her body was now covered with dust, soil, leaves. Due to this severe Tapasya, Maa Parvati lost all her radiance.
Lord Shiva took notice of her penance and realized that she was indeed his Sati, from the previous birth.
He made the holy waters of Ganga flowing through his hair, to fall onto Maa Parvati.
This sacred water washed away all the dirt from Maa Parvati’s body and she was able to regain her lost radiance.
Maa Mahagauri represents the purity and inner beauty of every living being.
Devi Mahagauri represents Karuna rasa(kindness)

Navratri Day 7- Devi Kaalratri.
Fierce and Fearless.
She was named Kaalratri as her skin was as dark as night sky.

Devi Ambika created her most terrifying form -Kaalratri to defeat Asura Raktbeej.

Asura Raktbeej when attacked, from every drop of his blood that fell on the ground, a fully grown clone of Raktbeej was born, the battlefield was filled with hundreds of clones of the Asura.

Drinking up drops of blood falling from his wounds Kaalratri weakened the Raktbeej.
Not being able to multiply anymore, the badly wounded Raktbeej fell dead.

Kaalratri may seem scary , but she has a lot of love for her devotees, which is why they call her Shubhankari, the one who blesses people with goodness.

Devi Kaalratri represents Bibhatsa rasa (Disgust).

Navratri Day 6:
Devi Katyayani- The demon slayer.
Katyayani- The daughter of sage Katyayan.
(Katyayani is a fierce form of goddess who stood up to Mahishasura.)

Mahishasura asked Brahma for immortality, but it was against the law of universe.
So Mahisha asked alternatively that “Grant me a boon that no MALE GOD can ever defeat or kill me”
Brahma said “Tathastu”

Asuras started misusing the boon granted by Brahma and terrorized the Gods

Then Devi Katyayani fought a battle against Mahishasura which went on for nine days and nine nights.
“No man could kill you, Mahisha . But you forgot that a woman could!” Katyayani spoke to defeated Mahisha who lay at her feet.
Katyayani slayed the Mahishasura with her long sword.

Devi Katyayani represents Raudra rasa (Anger)

Skandmata- Mother of Skanda, THE GOD OF WAR.(Kartikeya)

Demon Tarakasur was blessed with a boon that no one can kill him except Shiva’s son.

Parvati and Shiva’s son was named Skanda. Gods made him Senapati of the army of Devas.

Skanda was a fierce fighter. Devi Parvati gave him weapon 'vel' to fight. He fought with asura and won the war.

Devi Skandmata represents Veera rasa (heroism/courage).

Devi Kushmanda- The Bright Beacon

Ku means ‘little’, ushma means ‘warmth’ and anda means an ‘egg’ that means ‘the one who created the little cosmic egg through her warm smile’ The cosmic egg here is the universe

The Story goes back in a time, much before the universe even existed. Back then AdiShakti appeared as a delightful flash of light every now and then.

Shakti then decided to stay in a place using a Black sphere as a base. She created a new self Kushmanda and flashed a radiant smile, the black sphere turned into fiery , golden SUN that we see in the sky.

The glow appered around Sun and Yes, a universe is born!

And sun in centre giving them light and energy , this is our Solar system.

Devi Chandaghanta-Dear to all.

Parvati on her wedding day got really angry on Shiva’s dressup, and to show how furious she was, she wore a deadly crescent moon shaped bell, ‘Chandra-moon, ghanta-bell’ that gives her name- ChandraGhanta, Sound of which created fear among guests.

Devi Chandraghanta represents Bhayaanaka Rasa(Fear)-Shocked to see Shivas’s wedding look, she creates fear among the groom’s followers by her dramatic look. Shiva then turned himself to look like a well dressed bridegroom, then the marriage takes place after much drama.
