I spent a large part of my year behind the wheel. From driving on expressways to dirt roads to slush to no roads at all, I did it all. I was on the road yesterday, and I was driving until an hour back today as well. People who know me, even a little bit, know how much I enjoy it.

So when I look back at 2019, I remember the places I saw, the people I met, the experiences, the images I made. They are all distinct memories, but there has been a common thread - of a car. Of conversations in a car, of listening to my favourite music over and over again and singing (Oh Ophelia!) & of discovering new music with people, of racing and despising all Cretas out there, of finding chai in the middle of the night in dense fog, of finding 'virgin' dunes in the middle of the desert, of life.

Of course the year wasn't all about driving, or even travel for that matter. Many beautiful and difficult things happened, but I think the purpose of looking back is to find gems in the past, and then look ahead.

These were some gems of my 2019, and I am now looking at 2020 from behind the wheel. What are you looking at? @ Jaipur, Rajasthan

Before this day, I was very sure of what my favourite sunset was. But then I saw this.

Somewhere between trying to spot a dinosaur in the citylights to a wave in the clouds, it became one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Not lot of things beat a good sunset. What's your favourite?

Mumbai Waking Up

I have been living near this spot in Mumbai for more than a year. It's one of the few places from where you can see the sun rise behind the ocean (lots of places for sunsets).

One night, I decided that I will wake and go see the sunrise the next morning. I went. I saw one of the most beautiful sunrises I have seen but I didn't have my camera with me. It was a great experience but I knew I can't not capture that.

So I went again, with my camera, and brought back a piece of it with me. This is what I saw. :)

PS: Music by the amazing - Patience (Cleopatra).

There are usually happy memories associated with most of my images. Mostly because of the contentment I feel when I get the shot I want. This one was not like all others.

This shot did not make me content, or atleast not as much as I would like to be. The plant is not in focus, but the stars are. In a way it works, making the plant spectators of the magical night sky.

But the reason why I couldn't perfect this is because we literally packed up and left the spot out of fear. If you have ever been in the wild, you know even the most common noises sound like roars. We heard the voice of an animal, and it kept growing louder, as if it was approaching us.

Maybe I could have stayed for 2 more mins and got my shot, but now I have a story to tell.

No regrets. :)

I used the compass in my phone, found the north star and set up my composition based on that. As is apparent, my compass was not calibrated.

I wanted the polaris much closer to the center of the frame but I think even this 'mistake' worked.

The red in the dunes is from a car that passed behind my camera. I feared it would ruin my image by making it too bright. But, even this worked.

Basically, I got really lucky with this one. @ Thar Desert

What does this look like to you?

There was a time when I watched hours and hours of tutorials on Photoshop. I wanted to learn everything there was to learn, and be able to make whatever I wanted to.

Such photos are called 'tiny planet' photos, made out of a 360° shot. I developed a technique to make these out of simple photos as well.

I'm definitely a photographer first and an editor second. But after a long time, I felt like making something mew out of some of my favourite images. And I had a lot of fun.

We saw these 2 old men just sitting in the shade of this tree while just roaming around Sam village. We stopped the car because they seemed like a good subject for a photo.

They were farmers but had nothing to do. It hadn't rained in over a year. Not the last year, not this year. So they were just sitting there, doing nothing. They politely agreed when we asked if we could take their photos.

Then, they asked if we wanted a camel ride. Somehow, these 2 farmers grappling with drought suddenly became strangers we shouldn't trust. Maybe it was our childhood conditioning to never trust strangers, maybe because they'd ask for money, I don't know.

I was left with a weird feeling when we left. As if the whole thing wasn't really fair to them. As if we used them for a photo-op.

So, I'm not going to share any beautiful, crisp portrait of these 2 men. I'm going to show you the reality of their lives - trying to find some shade in a vast expanse of nothingness, trying to survive somehow.

Ensuring my pictures are 'clean' in every manner is very important to me. And so naturally I wanted these dunes to be spotless and pristine.

I saw these step marks in the sand, maybe from a small bird or some other small animal that dwells in the desert. My instinct was to move a bit and find a 'cleaner' spot, but something told me they belonged in the picture.

Pictures are windows to the world - they show you things that you are geographically separated from. This one is your window to the desert landscapes of Rajasthan.

As a photographer, I get the privilege to decide what to show you and what to keep from you.

This time I chose truth over beauty. Perhaps there's a different kind of beauty in that. @ Thar Desert

After setting everything up for the shot, I popped open a Redbull can while waiting for this shot to expose.

A while later when we all met up near the car, my friends asked if I opened a Redbull. I said yes, and asked how did they know being so far. They said they smelled it.

I was so surprised. I mean, yes air travels, and so can the smell. But we are so used to being in a sensory explosion all the time with traffic noises and dozens of different smells at once, that we are never really totally aware of anything.

These are the kinds of things that surprise us and that's why we travel.

To live a little more, to experience a little more.

Deserts are supposed to be barren with no people and civilization. Knowing or rather hoping this, we left for Jaisalmer to shoot the night sky with some sand dunes.

As it turns out, finding 'virgin' dunes is no joke. We kept walking and found only small patches of untouched sand amidst a mess created by the many tourists that visit the place. (us included)

To make things worse, the moon was out so we couldn't shoot the milky way. But I had to shoot something, I couldn't come empty handed.

Trying to make the most of what I had, I just covered some of the step marks by myself and got a backlit self portrait. I think it worked out fine.

Limitation has its own power.

I felt the urge to go out and shoot after a long time today.

I checked my batteries and only 1 had power, 11%. I thought of not going but went anyway.

I could only turn my camera on when I really had to take a shot. I couldn't waste any power. I kept walking and walking, looking for that one image that would work. I reached Rajabai, set the frame and waited for the bus to come in my frame and took a few shots. I knew I had got what I wanted.

I turned my camera off and went to Marine Drive. After passing by dozens of couples, I found a place to sit and listen to music.

Quite an eventful evening. But I think I'll always keep my batteries charged now.
