Night Sky over Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve, Ontario. Last Tuesday weather forecasts indicated a high chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis in Southern Ontario. A two-and-a-half hour drive from Toronto took us to a location with particularly dark skies, where we joined quite a number of sky gazers. As luck had it, we didn't see the Aurora, but nevertheless we were treated to a spectacular night sky, complete with the Milky Way visible on the right, and numerous meteors shooting across it.

All in all, a wonderful experience!

Common Tern Aerial Show - Tommy Thompson Park. Terns race through the sky at an incredible speed, so I am very happy to have been able to capture this pair. The bird on the right seems very flexible doing a twist & turn combination.

Downtown Balconies. The balconies of this downtown Toronto building caught my eye, and I specifically liked how the three plants add life to the scene. I also like the interaction between these plants and the empty vase on the level below.

Eastern Phoebe catching insect. During the Toronto Camera Club outing last weekend I visited a hide on Wylie Road, near Kirkfield, and was delighted to see an Eastern Phoebe hopping back and forth between an adjacent tree and the ground near it. As it turns out the bird caught a rather large insect mid-air, and looking at subsequent photos I realized it had some trouble getting the entire insect into its mouth and down its throat.

Eastern Bluebird with 3 worms. I've photographed Eastern Bluebirds with worms before, but last weekend was the first time I captured the image of one that had 3 worms in its beak. The bird was looking for food for its chicks, and this time it really got lucky!

Nesting Osprey couple sharing dinner.

Despite the rainy and windy weather this weekend, I'm very much enjoying the Spring Toronto Camera Club nature outing, which is taking place in the Kirkfield area, near Orillia - about two-hour's drive northeast of Toronto.

One of the locations I visited yesterday was this Osprey nest. Since the eggs are still incubating, the male Osprey brings only 2-3 fish to the nest each day, and I was very lucky to witness one of these occasions. Interestingly, the male typically eats the head of the fish to give it an energy boost before returning to the nest, and he then gives the rest of the fish to the female. Since the chicks have not yet hatched, the female takes the fish to a nearby perch and eats it outside of the nest. This allows her to keep the nest clean and avoid attracting predators with fish smell. During this time, the male stays in the nest and continues to protect the eggs and to keep them warm.

I was excited to observe this and capture these images!
