Things We Notice | Part 01.

At Indian weddings, the big moments get all the attention. The entry. The varmala. The pheras. The speeches. Fair enough.

But after 17 years of photographing weddings, we’ve learnt to keep watching everything happening around them.

Two fathers quietly becoming family. Sisters making sure the groom remembers he is still their little brother. A joke we never heard. A dad who was doing completely fine…until he wasn’t.

These aren’t always the moments anyone planned. They are often the photographs people return to.

For us, candid wedding photography isn’t about catching people unaware. It is about paying attention. To people, relationships and the half-seconds that disappear unless someone is looking.

A pair of juttis, a gang of determined peeps, and a full-blown wedding heist.

Mukund’s juta churai quickly turned into a chase across the wedding, with people running, grabbing, snatching and doing whatever it took to get their hands on his shoes. What started as a little ritual turned into absolute chaos, and honestly - that’s exactly how it should be.

Pre-wedding photography at Hotel Irada, Pune Wine Country.

Maitri and Mukund had already spent three years together before their pre-wedding photoshoot near Pune. Long enough to know the coffee (or cocktail?) order, the changing moods and exactly which joke will make the other person lose composure.

Set within a working winery outside Pune, Hotel Irada gave us neoclassical architecture, vineyard rows and a quiet stretch of woodland. We arrived planning polished, editorial couple portraits. Maitri and Mukund had other ideas.

The photographs gradually moved from composed to candid: walking, laughing, running through the gardens and repeatedly failing to take our instructions - or each other - too seriously.

That became the real story of this session. Not simply how they look together, but who they become around each other.
Seriously in love. Not very serious people.

A Bombay girl, a Malayali boy, and a wedding that was straight out of a Pinterest board.

Maitri and Mukund took everyone to The Fairmont Palace Udaipur for a destination wedding that was full of dancing, celebrations and a lot of energy.

Rhea and Raghav’s destination wedding at ITC Savoy, Mussoorie.

We always try and do a small shoot before the wedding madness begins. No crowd, no schedule, no one yelling “candid pose please.” Just the couple, the pine trees, and whatever the Mussoorie light decided to do that evening. It decided to show off.

These two needed exactly zero direction. We pointed them at a tree and they did the rest. Spinning until someone nearly went down, running barefoot across the lawn, a daisy tucked behind her ear that none of us planned. Somewhere in there I stopped giving instructions and just let the camera keep up.

Rhea put it better than I could. She said it was never one big moment, just the slow realisation that whatever happened, good news or bad, the instinct was always the same. Tell them first.
That is the whole thing, isn’t it. Before the lehengas and the baraat and the 400 guests, it comes down to two people who want to tell each other everything before anyone else.

Niharika and Roberto’s phoolon ki haldi at Samode Palace, Jaipur.

Day two of their destination wedding in Rajasthan, and Samode handed us a courtyard full of marigolds, painted arches that have been showing off for 475 years, and a couple who clearly did not get the memo about staying clean.

Then the petals started flying. Flowers instead of turmeric, smoke guns instead of subtlety, and a yard full of Indian and Spanish friends who all arrived at the same conclusion at the same time: the entire point is to bury the couple in colour. Roberto’s side caught on fast.

Somewhere in the middle of it, Niharika’s grandmother grabbed her hands and danced. That is the frame we will keep.

What we keep coming back to from this wedding is how easily two cultures became one celebration. None of it felt borrowed. Just two people completely at home in their own party.
