A few days ago I was photographing at one of the Godrej Enterprises factories in Goa.

While working on the production floor I met Pramodini, Mayuri and Sushanti. Women who have spent years building their professional lives inside an environment that most people rarely see.

Industrial photography is often associated with machines, infrastructure and scale. But factories are also communities of people. Skilled, experienced, dedicated people whose stories are part of what keeps these places running.

When we photographed them, the intention was simple. To show them as they are in their everyday environment. Confident, capable and proud of the work they do.

These portraits were later used by Godrej Enterprises for their International Women’s Day campaign.

For me, moments like this are always a reminder that behind every industrial process there are people whose journeys deserve to be seen.

What an extraordinary experience spending time with these kids. Last week, while photographing CSR initiatives in remote parts of Maharashtra, I found myself unexpectedly moved. In places where resources are limited and challenges are real, the energy, curiosity, and quiet determination of these children were deeply inspiring.

Seeing the tangible impact of focused effort and genuine commitment on the ground filled me with a rare kind of optimism — the kind that doesn’t come from headlines or promises, but from witnessing real change taking root in real lives. It was a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

Eva and I went to visit Rozi for Christmas, and we never want to say no to her food Rozi has been our cook in the past 15 years, and has been taking very good care of us over the years.
Her home has always been colorful and beautiful to shoot. Merry Christmas 🎄

This was not the shot. This was the light testing. This couple walked through the door completely unaware and the flash did the rest. You can’t chase these moments but you need to be ready for them. It’s an outtake but definitely a keeper :)

Pushkar, Rajasthan.
A lone palm leaning over a concrete edge like it’s seen too much sun and not enough rain. Shot with an iPhone on a day when the sky felt heavy and everything stood still.

Sometimes you don’t need the perfect camera—just the instinct to stop, look, and press the shutter before the moment disappears.

Minimal. Quiet. A little broken. Still standing.

India, 2004.
I was still finding my voice as a documentary photographer when I began covering India’s polio eradication campaign for the — trains, slums, riverbanks, deserts, boats, and thousands of kilometres where history moved quietly from hand to hand.

These images come from those early journeys:
a baby vaccinated through a train window, mothers crossing floodplains to reach a clinic, children chasing each other through dust in the shadow of the Taj as a country fought a virus that shaped generations.

I stayed with this story for years.
The work grew, evolved, and eventually became Triumph Over Polio published by UNICEF — later exhibited at the United Nations in New York. A reminder that progress is built slowly, drop by drop, child by child.

You don’t choose a story like this — it chooses you and won’t let go.

BEHIND THE INDIAN VEIL

Behind The Indian Veil chronicles award-winning photographer Sephi Bergerson’s extraordinary journey through uncharted wedding traditions in India. It reveals the differences and similarities in Indian wedding traditions, while seeking the common essence of this grand, colourful, fantastic celebration.

After living in India for more than 13 years, with almost seven of which spent working on this project, Sephi has arguably experienced, witnessed and documented a greater variety of Indian weddings than any other person on earth. As he traveled the length and breadth of India, he was invited into sacred places and intimate moments normally inaccessible to outsiders, witnessing traditions buried so deep in the subconscious of the subcontinent that even people from India don’t necessarily know about them. This incredible array of stories he was able to capture reveals cultures, traditions, and legacies as complex and diverse as India herself. Behind The Indian Veil features images and written stories from a vast assortment of Indian communities: Tamil Brahmin, Bengali, Sikh, Hindu Punjabi, Hyderabadi Muslim, Rajput, Kashmiri Pandit, Ladakhi Buddhist, Goan Catholic, Syrian Christian, Zoroastrian Parsi, Dawoodi Bhora, and Kodava Coorg. https://wedding.sephi.com/wedding-book/
