Also called Little Heron, it is a bird with lot of patience. It is primarily a fish-eater and feeds mostly by standing in the shallow water or branches overhanging the water. It waits in a crouched position for long periods between the strikes and sometime waits in the crouching position for more than 30 minutes for a successful strike.

Also called Neelkanth, it has a special place in Indian mythology. It is believed that Rama had seen a Neelkanth before he went to kill Ravana. Seeing a Neelkanth bird on Dussera is considered auspicious, but unfortunately it is becoming the very reason of the birds being caged.
