The village is a poignant example of the impacts of climate change, with villagers losing homes and livelihoods. In fact, it’s considered one of India’s most climate-vulnerable areas, with high rates of shoreline erosion 1.

For years, this coastline has been more than just a place I visit with a camera.

It has been a window into one of nature’s most remarkable stories. From nesting turtles and emerging hatchlings to quiet mornings and stormy evenings, the ocean has shared countless moments with those willing to slow down and watch.

Today, on World Ocean Day, I celebrate not just the wildlife that depends on these waters, but the ocean itself—the force that shapes this coast and connects all life along it.

Mass hatchling documented in the year 2023, this crow was repeatedly picking up Olive Ridley hatchlings as they made their way from the nest to the sea.

For the hatchlings, the journey to the ocean is filled with challenges from the very beginning. Crows, kites, dogs, crabs, fish, and many other predators take advantage of this brief window of vulnerability.

While difficult to witness, such interactions are a natural part of the coastal ecosystem. Of the thousands of hatchlings that emerge, only a small fraction will survive long enough to return to these shores as adults.
