Nepal’s Gen Z Activist Rakshya Bam Raises Climate Justice Concerns at Nobel Peace Conference in Oslo
Nepali youth activist and civic leader Rakshya Bam addressed the Nobel Peace Conference in Oslo, highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities and linking climate action with justice, democracy and accountability.
Bam, who emerged as one of the prominent voices of Nepal’s Gen Z movement, was among the speakers at the Nobel Peace Conference 2026, held in Oslo on September 3 under the theme “Democracy on the Brink.” The conference brought together Nobel Peace Prize laureates, civic leaders and youth activists from different countries.
In her remarks, Bam spoke about communities in different parts of Nepal, including Sudurpashchim, that have experienced significant losses and hardships linked to climate-related events. She argued that climate change is not only an environmental issue but also one involving justice, equality and shared responsibility.
“There will not be any peace and democratic justice without climate justice,” Bam said.
The 26-year-old activist from Kailali is known for her involvement in Nepal’s youth-led political movement and currently coordinates the Nepal Gen Z Front. She has previously worked with the Ujwal Thapa Foundation and has been involved in campaigns concerning transparency, youth participation, gender dignity and accountable governance.
