•| THE VIEW FROM LEBONG |•
🏇⛰️🎖️
What more can a traveller want when he can witness a clear view of 🏔️
Lebong is a valley about 1,000 feet below Darjeeling town, West Bengal, India. It is about 8 km from the Mall, the central location of Darjeeling. The valley is noted for its race course. It's no longer a race course. It has been taken over by the army from the 1980s. If you do visit this place be sure to drop into the Army wet canteen for a cup of chai and snacks.
Historically this used to be the world's highest and smallest race course. The race course was established along with the Lebong Cantonment in 1882 and has housed various British Army Regiments within its garrison. On a clear day the racecourse gives you a splendid view of Mt Kanchenjunga, and in my opinion its among the best view in entire Darjeeling. The racecourse post independence has been housing various Indian Army Regiments. You can enter the location with due permission from the sentry posted at the gate.
TO DO - Have a cup of white tea or a First Flush Muscatel tea from Makaibari ir Arya tea estate, if you visit Lebong also, don't forget the visit the little Army Cafe in the racecourse for a hot cup of coffee and some Pav Bhaji, Idili or Dosa ! Definitely a must visit in Darjeeling.
- LEBONG is the only place in to have a race course after
