A new road, Nimmu-Padum-Darcha (NPD), has recently opened, connecting to NH1 right near this merger point. I decided to take this route while returning from Leh to Manali (9th September 2026). It is approximately 300 km long and cuts down both travel time and the dangerous Gata Loops of the earlier route. Honestly, this is one of the smoothest roads I have ever driven, except for a few small patches where BRO is still working.
But before you take this road, a few things you should know: it is a long stretch with no Airtel network until you reach Padum, and the network disappears again once you start toward Darcha, you won't get signal again until you cross Shingo La Pass and enter Himachal. There are almost no restaurants between Nimmu and Padum, we stopped at a few points hoping for tea but had no luck. There are no petrol pumps either, so make sure your tank is full, and there are no mechanics on this route. We barely saw anyone else driving that day, so if your car breaks down, you will be relying on the kindness of strangers, another passing car or bike, for help. If you start late from Leh, you may end up sleeping in your car overnight in case of a breakdown. And if you the one who is driving the car, cover your hands or apply plenty of sunscreen, the bright sunlight will cook your skin.
On the positive side, you'll find a raw landscape untouched by human settlement. At every turn there's something new to take in, ice-capped mountains, kilometers of flat open ground, rivers, glaciers, waterfalls, and more. You'll be in awe the entire way.

केवटी जलप्रपात और भैरव बाबा की कड़ाही

कल रीवा के केवटी जलप्रपात गया था। सावन में झरने की गर्जना और चारों ओर की हरियाली मन मोह लेती है, लेकिन वहां भैरव बाबा के मंदिर के पास एक दृश्य ने मेरा ध्यान खींच लिया - उमस भरी गर्मी में कई महिलाएं भारी साड़ियों में लकड़ी के चूल्हे पर पूड़ियां तल रही थीं। पता चला कि यह सदियों पुरानी "कड़ाही चढ़ाने" की परंपरा है। भैरव बाबा क्षेत्रपाल हैं - स्थान के रक्षक देवता। लोग उनसे मन्नत मांगते हैं और मनोकामना पूरी होने पर पूरा परिवार मंदिर आकर वहीं ताजा पूड़ी-हलवा बनाकर भोग लगाता है, फिर वही प्रसाद सबमें बंटता है।

सोचने वाली बात यह है कि जो गर्मी हमें असहनीय लगती है, वह उनके लिए श्रद्धा का हिस्सा है। मन्नत की कड़ाही में पसीना और परिश्रम ही तो अर्पण की सच्चाई है - जैसे कांवड़िये नंगे पैर सैकड़ों किलोमीटर चलते हैं। चेहरों पर थकान नहीं, मन्नत पूरी होने का संतोष और उत्सव की खुशी थी। शायद हम एसी वालों ने वह अनुभव खो दिया है जहां अर्थ से जुड़ा कठिन परिश्रम भी आनंद बन जाता है।

Masroor Rock-cut Temple, hidden in the hills of Kangra, is one of North India’s most fascinating yet lesser-known heritage sites.
