Abishek & Nithisha | This was the first wedding-related event I photographed in two years, and for a newfound companion in the past year, couple that with my first overseas shoot, made it all the more special. Honestly it felt like being a rookie all over again, but with the aid of others around me, the poses came through! And realised I like giving a grainy and more diffused edit to the photos! Playing with the limited space we had of an impromptu shoot post-wedding meeting, pretty glad with how it turned out! Congrats to the couple and may the Lord remember your consecration to be for Christ and the church!

I first knew Jocelyn as my senior in School of the Arts, Singapore, and we were acquainted through the Orchestra of Music Makers’ camp then. Who’d have guessed that the next time our paths crossed was 10 years later in different art forms; me, a journalist, reaching out to her, a full-time musician, for a potential feature.

Unlike the run-of-the-mill classically trained musicians I have interviewed in the past year, Jocelyn’s musical journey and profession is one that shows the versatility new-wave musicians of our generation have. Not only has she played in renowned orchestras globally, she has ventured into the pop world, bringing in numerous music collaborators and opportunities as big as playing for JJ Lin’s world tour. Of course, the latest news of hers that got us connected in the first place – her performance of JVKE’s ‘Golden Hour’ with pianist Daim Dean – just shows how music transcends physical boundaries and the potential up and coming musicians like her have in this space in Singapore.

Finally releasing this feature on my good friend Sky Shen 沈于翔, about the important experiences behind his debut album (which is really worth listening to if you are a fan of JJ Lin and Eric Chou) 🙂 Happy CNY and this is definitely just the beginning for my dear pal!

Featuring original compositions dating as far back as 2015, the five-track album chronicles Sky’s experiences of romantic love as a person with a physical disability.

After a year-long journey of recording and producing his debut album ‘Wheel You Love Me’, singer-songwriter Sky Shen 沈于翔 held a two-day showcase for family and friends in late November.

For a collective total of over 100 attendees, Sky, real name Shen Yu Xiang, sung along to and screened the music videos accompanying the five-track album.

“These songs are based on experiences at different stages of my life, so some of these songs are as old as 2015,” says Sky, who lives with muscular dystrophy.

“I think a lot of this project was able to happen because of friends, friends of friends, and people who related to and believed in the project.”

In November 2022, student-led volunteer initiative The Resonance Project held a two-night music showcase to raise funds for their continued efforts in community service.

Since the project’s inception in 2021, what began as a conversation between then-schoolmates Elijah Chao and Ivan Chiew has grown to a 260-strong team who spend several hours weekly teaching the guitar and ukulele to disadvantaged kids and elderly.

Currently, the project, consisting of students from various schools aged 12 to 18, serves 160 beneficiaries in 10 centres across Singapore.

“The youth community we belong to still needs lots of serving and we are trying to solve that puzzle,” said the project’s co-founder Elijah, 19, who is soon stepping down as president to take an advisory role in mid 2023.

“Someone needs to do it and even though it’s unknown territory, we are going to try to be that someone.”

Apple & Nixon | I’ve known them individually at different times and places in my church life; for Nixon it was through several trainings and conferences in Malaysia, and for Apple it was during her time of study here in Singapore. And in our numerous interactions, I could tell they love God very much and are people-centred persons. So as God would have it, they fell in love in the midst of the pandemic and are now officially husband and wife! Thanks Apple for inviting me as a guest, it was a good first overseas wedding trip and it was my pleasure to photograph you both on your special day! May God be with you both and till we meet again!

Returning in full physical capacity after two years of virtual celebrations, the Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinatown features a 10m-tall sculpture, a new food fair, trade fair amongst other smaller events.

Was a perfect opportunity to play with long-exposure photography and it felt great seeing the bustling activities in the vicinity once again.

The pre-COVID National Day crowds are back in full swing for Singapore’s 57th birthday, with locals and tourists alike gathering to witness the few hours of celebrations. Though I got panicky halfway through because of the intense throngs of people and the afternoon heatwave, I sort of basked in the moment knowing this is the last time the Parade will be held at the Float for the next few years.

Even within the few hours I spent following Community Blessings Ministry member Vincent Chia on one of his regular engagements with tissue paper sellers in Woodlands and Marsiling, I can see his meek and welcoming personality shine through.

His work, which includes rallying together volunteers like him, is part of the Vulnerable-In-Community Network that supports rough sleepers, cardboard collectors and tissue paper sellers in Singapore.

Aside from these regular walks to offer bread, beverage or a listening ear, Vincent also works closely with social service offices on more complex cases like decluttering homes.
