Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, Nepal is called the Monkey Temple because of the many monkeys that live around it. The monkeys are considered holy and are said to have evolved from head lice. According to legend and myths, Manjushree, the bodhisattva of wisdom, was raising the hill on which the stupa now stands.
