Reverence in Stone | Photopolymer etchings on Khadi paper wrapped around stainless steel

Details of some photo etchings I have been working on. Thinking of this idea of how we revere stones and architecture and archeological forms, often entrapping a soul within them.
Each image is layers of such entrapments, where I try and destruct and reconstruct them to unearth the soul beneath.

I treat the stainless steel as a hard form that backs the works, making them object/painting like, giving the strength to our fragile thoughts.

The weight of me.

The weight of me is the weight of all women that have preceded me, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters… The weight of me is that of a holy book wrapped in red on the mantle of our 4 walled home. The weight of me now is an empty journal, wrapped in red, for me to write my own story, to add my own weight. To build my 1000 walled home.

Very excited to show मूल (Mūla) here in India along with some brilliant artists curated by for at .kala.sangam . A work made for the end of my Masters and for the beginning of a new chapter.

The show is open until 8th February at .kala.sangam

‘Tread through a new topography and encounter as an archivist. The central exhibition, Omens. Organisms. Objects. Order. curated by Wribhu Borphukon ( ), is an imaginarium of object hood, each work treated as an artefact and a techne, with their own layers of material grammar, narrative motifs, and ritualistic behaviors. It is refused a singular reading, instead the works loop across various ontologies, languages and meanings, inviting people to re-order.

I’ll share about my practice, how my photographs lead me to exploring materials, especially clay. Taking inspiration from the ongoing exhibition and from my archive of photographs, we’ll work our way, carving through the clay, giving meaning to a solid block.

Reverence in stone.
I wonder how we put trust and faith in stones, mark them holy and offer prayers.
Do we translate this reverence to living bodies? Bodies which age, transform and carry history.
