Seeing light and the subject or one can say - light in relation to the subject or vice versa plays a much more crucial role as compared to the camera. Having an expensive camera or a lens does not make you a better photographer. it's the vision that matters the most.

Actually, besides seeing light, you need to be good at seeing. Anyone can take a photograph but when you talk about taking a good photograph, it’s all about seeing not just the light but your complete subject. What to shoot? How much to show are important questions that decide if the photograph is good. That’s the difference between a good Photograph and a snapshot. The content.

The three-dimensionality of the subject in Photography is revealed by the mid-tones, the most important tone as compared to the light and dark tones. The subtle gradation of shades in between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks gives body and substance to all photographs and plays a key role if the photograph is flat.
These tones are the photographic equivalent of the shading in an artist’s drawing. It's this shading - the mid tones that help distinguish and define the contours of a face, or a cube. These help us visually distinguish between a cone from a sphere. To accentuate form, you want the changes in tone between areas of dark and light to be as gradual as possible. This is primarily achieved using lighting. A good understanding of the direction and quality of Light can help a photographer depict a form with the help of tones.

The Biggest mistake which new aspiring models make is when they mix the Portfolio with the guarantee of work. Many modelling agencies suggest that they will get the models work as well but only if they get their portfolio done from them. some of the important factors new models should keep in mind are summed up below.

A portfolio is important first - When you look out for a Photographer to make your portfolio concentrate on the quality of Photographs which the Photographer can give you. Look at his past photographs which will give you a good enough idea about how the Photographer will perform and if he can do justice to your profile. Your Fashion photographer is an artist and you need someone who can enhance your looks and make you look good in front of the camera. He is not essentially a marketing person and it won't make much sense to expect him to promote you as a part of his portfolio fees. You want your photographs clicked by a good photographer because he is good but not because he will promote you. Both may not go side by side. If possible photographers may promote their own models but it is not always necessary due to several reasons.

A Professional Photographer. Why ? When you are getting a Modelling portfolio made, you need someone creative to do it. Someone who understands light and other parameters involved and shoot you the way you look the best. A good Photographer will shoot you to bring out the best in you using his experience, talent and equipment. The Photographer will also guide you as to what steps you should take next. How you should go about the business of modelling.

As a Photographer, How do I pose the Models ? or what are the guidelines one should keep in mind while posing as a model.
There is no rocket science involved in posing a model whether it is for modelling or for a fashion shoot. It could even be for a simple corporate portrait or a formal portrait of a Bride. Once you gain some experience as a Photographer, it all comes naturally to you and you very instinctively guide your model, who may have been hired for a professional Fashion shoot or who may be getting her own professional modelling Portfolio made from you. In both the cases, it's very important and relevant to meet the model beforehand so as to understand her potential. Once I meet, I get an idea about the models expressions and overall body language.

How one poses can vary a lot from model to model and depends on her Body type as well to some extent. What ever the case maybe, one should not be nervous and confidently pose without getting conscious about your body. Do it naturally and with spontaneity.

What drew you to this field?

It’s a derivative of Fashion, N**e and Modeling. These all involve humans. Probably the artistic interest in shooting Humans in their n**e forms and the Photography exhibitions which followed created the category of Bo***ir Photography on my website. A lot of people wish to be photographed like a model. A lot of people like to flaunt their assets but just for themselves or their loved ones.

I am often asked this question, "How many photographs will be there in a Portfolio?"

"well", I reply, "there are no restrictions on the number of Photographs as such, It's all about the number of looks. a portfolio with about 5 looks is good enough and works for all"

"Just 5 Images ?" .......

Let me explain the difference between the number of photographs and the number of looks.
When any good professional photographer shoots, he or she does not shoot just one photograph to get one final photograph. One needs to take a number of photographs to get the one, the photographer is looking for. Well, it does not mean that it's a hit and trial method. It's all about how you look at a person. The aspiring model in front of the camera needs to be shot in such a manner that it enhances her or his looks, beauty and personality as the case may be. The whole exercise is gradually build up to achieve the desired results. As you look through the camera, directing the model, you take a picture or two to further direct the model and continue to improve the posture, expressions and the overall performance of the model, who may be facing the camera for the first time.

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. But eyes of the Beauty direct the beholder where all to look. Most expressions are conveyed through the eyes and the eye contact makes a lot of difference. It holds the attention if the eyes are expressive and captivating. On the other hand the model's line of sight can lead you to other areas in the photograph.
