GOING BACK IN TIME: The two children, having a jolly ride on this decorated horse-drawn chariot, were actually travelling a car when they spotted the retro vehicle and perhaps took a fancy to it. Suddenly the car stopped by the side of Anna Salai and the two children, along with the adult accompanying them, boarded the chariot with the permission of the charioteer. Cars may be modern but horse-drawn carts can impress city children.

Begging with music and dance

You might have seen families engaged in begging by involving children as an organised group. Even small girls are normally made to do acrobatic act and do pole walking etc. But this scene at Velachery was different. Two small kids,a young boy and a girl, who do not speak the local tongue, were collecting alms through music and dance. One boy was gyrating to the beats of the drums, struck by the other. Topping it

Top. For today's modern children the word means various things. To that generation that throngs malls like the Phoenix for fun and entertainment, top could refer to the 'topping' on the pizza, 'topping' up the mobile charge or a 'top' of the chart video. But not far from Phoenix mall, in Velachery, this boy was spotted rolling a top, which is a traditional toy that is given the spin with a sling and played as a game as well as a pass time. While many thought we have lost the toy to the ravages of time and technology, it is heartening to see it spinning on the hand of child. Perhaps the picture could make some of those in the older generation turn nostalgic, too. For many kids, however, it may look odd and exciting, too.

Shooting mother: Back from school, the child takes a picture of his mother at her work place in Kilpauk. The mother, too, is excited about posing for the child with an smile, despite the drudgery of sitting on the roadside, selling flowers.

A special rooster: This rooster that roams the streets of Kolathur is a special bird that has endeared itself to the people of the locality. One of its legs were broken two years back. As a person in the locality said, the leg was broken by some recalcitrant youth. They call him 'Muruga'. But it is amazing that he has overcome the disability and had pulled on.

In supreme Irony
The two women flanking the man - all three of them going for a walk on Besant Nagar beach on Saturday - could not fill the void in his life, if the legend emblazoned on the back of his T-shirt is anything to go by. 'But I miss you', reads the legend, suggesting that his heart still yearns for that special someone.

Between work and child: This drum seller from north India cannot leave behind his child at home because his wife was unwell (as he told the photographer in sign language) and can not stay at home as the family has to eat. So he carries the child even while selling his wares at Besant Nagar on Saturday.
