चंबा हिमाचल प्रदेश के सबसे प्राचीन और ऐतिहासिक नगरों में से एक है। जिला प्रशासन के अनुसार चंबा का इतिहास लगभग 500 ईस्वी तक दर्ज मिलता है और यहां की ऐतिहासिक धरोहरों को सदियों से संरक्षित किया गया है।
सन् 2006 में चंबा शहर के 1000 वर्ष पूरे होने के उपलक्ष्य में "चंबा मिलेनियम" समारोह आयोजित किया गया। यह समारोह 14 से 20 अप्रैल 2006 तक चला।
इसी सहस्राब्दी (1000 वर्ष) की याद में ऐतिहासिक चंबा चौगान के मुख्य प्रवेश क्षेत्र में मिलेनियम गेट का निर्माण करवाया गया। इसलिए इसका नाम Millennium Gate पड़ा। आज यह चौगान और चंबा शहर की पहचान बने प्रमुख स्थलों में गिना जाता है।
