The magnificent Imambarah was constructed between 1841-1861 out of the funds of the philanthropist Hazi Mohammad Mohsin who created a wake for religious, educational and welfare purposes for the general public irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
An Imambarah is place of gathering to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazarat Imam Hussain, The grand son of prophet Mahammad in the battle of Karbala in Iraq to protect and keep alive. The original islam which the then rulers were trying to destroy totally.
Accordingly, this tragedy which occured during islamic month of Muharram is observed during the first ten days of Karbala where Hazarat Imam Hussain with his seventy two relatives and followers, preferred death rather than to compromise with those who were out to destroy islam.

Chandannagar was established as a French colony in 1673, when the French obtained permission from Ibrahim Khan, the Nawab of Bengal, to establish a trading post on the right bank of the Hughli River. In that year (1673-74) Duplessis, the French Commander,built a house after gathering a plot at Taldanga on the northern part of the present Chandannagar with the permission of Ibrahim Khan, the then Nawab of Bengal.

in 1730 Joseph François Dupleix was appointed governor of the city. Chandannagar was the main center for European commerce in Bengal.

British East India Company and Admiral Charles Watson of the British Navy bombarded and captured Chandannagar on 23 March 1757.
