What do you do to stop the chattering of the mind? Do you care to do anything about it, or have you got so used to it that you consider it normal?

If you see a man talking to himself loud, what would you think of him? Won't you call him mad? And how about you? How about me? Don't we also talk with ourselves all the time, though silently. This constant inner talking, doesn't matter whether it is silent or loud, is an indicator of our inner life.

Aren't we trying to void the aloneness, the solitude within us, by this constant chattering?

Is this inner chit-chat not a sign of an unlived life; an unlived day, an unlived moment? You wanted to do something, or say something, you wanted to respond to a situation in a certain manner, but you held yourself back, perhaps because of fear or etiquette. And now, as you go to bed, your mind is busy trying to re-live that moment, trying to complete that moment by this inner chattering. Isn't it so?

Let's go deeper into it.

On the 7th day of the experiment, in the tranquil surroundings of a nearby garden, with the sounds of flowing water and chirpping birds, we lived the Osho Naadbrahma Meditation!
Later in the evening, a few of my friends joined me as i sat in silence, amidst the sounds of honking horns and chattering people!

"Let the mind chatter... you be watchful...Watching, parallel to the mind something new arises in you. Remember it: parallel to the mind the witnessing arises in you. That witnessing has no chattering in it. It is something HIGHER than the mind.

You sometimes try! The mind is chattering - do one small thing - the mind is chattering, you cannot go to sleep, you cannot do anything and it is constantly running there like a mad dog. You just do one thing: you sit silently in the chair, relax your body, and say to the mind, "Okay - now I will listen. Tell me what you want to say." And for a single moment you will be surprised - the chattering stops. The moment you say, "I will listen. Okay...." It will be only for a single moment, but you know the secret.

What happened when you said, "I will listen"? - you became aware. And mind is very respectful towards awareness. Wherever awareness is, the master is - and the slave simply follows."

IS YOUR MIND YOURS?

"The question is whether the mind is your own or implanted by others — because the others implant a mind in you which does not serve you, but serves their purposes...You are prepared by the parents, by the teachers, by the priests, by your educational system to have a certain kind of mind, and your whole life you go on living through that certain kind of mind. That is a borrowed life. And that is why there is so much misery in the world: because nobody is living authentically, nobody is living his own self; he is simply following orders implanted in him...And I want you to understand that it is not your mind, and your search should be to find your own mind. To be under somebody else’s impact is to remain psychologically a slave...On your account every society, particularly those who are in power — either through money or through politics or through religion or through knowledge, or for any reason — those who are in power don’t want people to have their own minds. The body is, perhaps the most ignored of all the gifts life has showered upon us. There is no life, as we know it, without this body. And because it was given to us, unasked for; we never earned it, we take it for granted.

Let's dive deep into the fact that this body is a gift! If we understand this, truly, deeply, we would realize that we don't own the body, but we owe much to it.

"The body is the most complex mechanism in existence. It is simply marvelous! – and blessed are those who marvel. Begin the feeling of wonder with your own body, because that is the closest to you. The closest nature has approached to you, the closest existence has come to you, is through the body. In your body is the water of the oceans, in your body is the fire of the stars and the suns, in your body is the air, your body is made of earth. Your body represents the whole existence, all the elements. And what a transformation! What a metamorphosis! Look at the earth and then look at your body – what a transformation, and you have never marveled about it! Dust has become divine – what greater mystery is possible? Are you your mind?

Don't be in a hurry to answer it; neither 'Yes' nor 'No'. Just don't accept any answer the mind supplies. Let the question sink deep into your heart, let it grow there and wait!

Let us meditate on the question, let us enquire into the implications of the question.

If your immediate answer to the question is 'Yes!', question yourself- Do I really understand that I am not my mind? Or I believe so, because mystics have been talking about it down the ages. Do I live my life as a No-Mind; unconditioned by the past and the future? Do I live my life with no sense of identity? All identification belongs to the mind. A man of No-Mind is free of all labels.

The implications of the question are vast and profound. So let's put away all that we believe we know, and dive deep into the enquiry.

Am I my mind?

We are here, drifting through moments, lost in affairs of the world; our own little world of endless desires, worries and momentary happiness. Always seeking pleasure and avoiding pain, we somehow fight our way through the uncharted territory of life, hoping to find the lasting happiness at the end of the road, in some fictitious future. That future never happens, it is fictitious, a mirage. But we don't care.

We ignore the sign-posts on the way, sign-posts that read "Life is NowHere!", but our cluttered, restless mind reads it, "Life is NoWhere!" So we seek it, we seek that which is already given! Never taking a moment to sit back and wonder: "Why we are here, after all?
To seek, or to Be?"

When was the last time you asked yourself a question that cannot be answered? A question that cannot be answered intellectually. When was the last time you asked yourself, not just verbally, but from the very core of your heart, a question that is the death of all the answers? A question that is the death of all thinking, analyzing...a question that is, perhaps, the death of mind itself! When was the last time you asked yourself a forbidden question?

Am asking myself too. We have been taught answers, borrowed answers, and never allowed to question those answers. And the forbidden questions? They are either ignored, tabooed or tagged as philosophical.

It's a dangerous territory: to ask and live with a question that is unanswerable,; a question that demands not thinking but mutation, transformation.

To live with such a question, without accepting any answers, is one of the most courageous acts possible. The mind, the ego, is afraid to encounter such a question; it feels impotent before it. The mind has no way but to surrender to the question, and that is too much a price to pay for. And so the mind, the ego, escapes from these existential questions, and continues to vegetate in the comfort of the given answers.

What are these forbidden questions?

Let's take on this journey to enquire into some of these forbidden questions; let's meditate on these questions with no desire to find an answer. All desiring is moving into the future, let's stay with the questions here-and-now, and see what happens!

The Empty Chair is a journey into this forbidden territory. BE AWARE!

I was thinking what should I give to you today? Because this is my birthday, I was incarnated into this body on this day. This is the day I saw for the first time the green of the trees and the blue of the skies. This was the day I for the first time opened my eyes and saw God all around. Of course the word ‘God’ didn’t exist at that moment, but what I saw was God. I was thinking what should I give to you today? Then I remembered a saying of Buddha: Sabba Danam Dhamma Danana Jnati– the gift of truth excels all other gifts. And my truth is love...
