💥Mangalsutra + Kumkum Ritual 💥
The Mangalsutra, a black and gold necklace with a gold or diamond pendant symbolizes good luck, love, and friendship. In Sanskirt, ‘mangala’ translates to sacred and ‘sutra’ to thread. Following the Hastamelap, the Bride moves to sit on the Groom’s left side, taking the closest position to the Groom’s heart. He then proceeds into the ceremony called Mangalya dharanam and places the Mangalsutra around her neck and applies sindoor, red vermillion (also known as kumkum), to the center of her forehead. These two offerings signify the Groom’s devotion to his Bride and the Bride’s new status as a married woman.

💥The Mangal Phera💥

The bride's parents give her away, the couple performs the mangal phera. They join hands and circle around the agni four to seven times, keeping in mind the four pillars to a happy life. These pillars represent duty to each other, family and God, prosperity, energy and passion, and salvation. Then after they circle the fire the couple races to be the first back to their seat. It's said that the fastest to sit will hold the dominance in the marriage.

This ceremony bears a deep religious significance because the parents of the couple seek the blessings of Mother Earth and ask permission to commence with the digging of the soil to erect the mandva or mandap (platform erected for the wedding rites covered with a canopy). The saptapadi or seven steps is another important ritual where the couple must go around the holy fire seven times. The groom chants mantras with each step. Thereby he requests his wife to take good care of the house, cook wholesome and healthy meals for their family, be thrifty with money, be an understanding and supporting partner to him, etc. The bride promises to fulfill these requests.
