When you feel as though you simply couldn’t wish for any more….

We headed out on our final game drive yesterday morning, having enjoyed the most incredible sightings from the moment they landed on the airstrip, my group were all perfectly content to spend our last morning in the bush soaking it all in. A final bush breakfast beneath the African sun, maybe the odd new bird species to add to their growing list, would have been more than sufficient. However, as has become something of a theme throughout this trip, it took only a few minutes after leaving camp before we found our first leopard. Unfortunately, he was busy marking his territory and quickly disappeared into the undergrowth. Not long afterwards, and still under the cover of darkness, we came across our second leopard, a female. She was a little bolder and clearly intent on finding herself some breakfast, carefully eyeing up the nearby impala. It was still too dark for photography, but we quietly hoped we might be able to stay with her until the first light.

Almost on cue, as the first golden beams broke, she leapt gracefully onto a beautiful fallen log and posed. I was in complete disbelief. I’ve never had so many leopards posing on branches, logs, and elevated perches as I have this week.

It was the perfect final sighting and a fitting conclusion to another magical week here in Botswana.

After a week blessed with almost relentless predator sightings, it was a joy to slow down and turn our lenses toward something different last night.

Zebra may be considered a ‘common’ safari subject, but there is nothing ordinary about these extraordinary creatures, especially when the light begins to soften and the world turns a shade of gold.

I strongly believe a truly rewarding photographic safari is about more than the Big Five or dramatic predator hunts. It’s about mood, atmosphere, and capturing those tender, fleeting moments that unfold in beautiful light.

Scenes like this, backlit stripes glowing against the setting sun, can be every bit as powerful, if not more, than a pride of sleepy midday lions. Of course, the magic lies in the balance: thrilling predator encounters paired with moody, atmospheric compositions of beautifully simple subjects and for sure we have had this mix during this departure.

Yesterday morning we had yet another amazing encounter with this beautiful lioness and her adorable cubs.

My goodness, this queen certainly knows how to choose her throne. One perfect ‘leopard log’ after another, every pose more perfect than the last. She didn’t just rest upon those branches, she owned them, and in doing so filled so many camera memory cards.

The past four days have been nothing less than extraordinary, countless leopard and lion sightings, great wild dogs and this morning we even got cheetah on a kill as we drove to the airstrip for our flight to Duba!

I haven’t had such a back log of photos to sort through for a very long time… and what a great problem to have. Certainly no complaints from me or my guests.

Thank you to the wonderful team at Selinda Explorers camp for another incredible season, looking forward to next year already.

Some of my most unforgettable leopard encounters over the past decade have unfolded in Selinda Reserve and last night was no exception.

We were en route to the airstrip to collect the rest of my group when my sharp-eyed guide, Stitch, suddenly paused. There, draped across a branch as if placed there by design, lay a leopard. Not just any branch but one of those impossibly perfect “leopard branches” we dream about as we rumble along safari tracks day after day. The kind that seems made for a leopard, yet so rarely delivers.

Before pulling off the road, Stitch lifted his binoculars to confirm her identity. The last thing we would ever want is to disturb a shy individual and send her dashing into the thickets. Within moments he confirmed, she was a familiar, relaxed female known to frequent the area so quietly approached.

What followed felt almost surreal.

One of my guests, who had arrived early, and I began photographing her as she posed effortlessly, despite a little harsh light, it was close to perfection but time was ticking, the rest of my group would be landing shortly. Do we leave to greet them? Or risk losing her if she descended and vanished into the dense undergrowth? If we took our eyes off her for even a moment, she could disappear without a trace.

We made the call to stay put and asked the other vehicles to collect the group and bring them straight to us. I won’t pretend, it was one of the longest hours of my life. Every stretch, every yawn, every subtle shift of her weight had my heart in my throat, would this be the moment she climbed down and disappear before the others arrived.

Thankfully both other vehicles arrived just as the light was beginning to soften, and each guest had the privilege of witnessing her magnificence. Once she had graciously allowed more than enough photographs, she descended with ease and proceeded to saunter through the long grass, illuminated by the soft glow of golden hour. She even made a brief hunting attempt on a herd of impala which was short lived as the baboons alerted them to her presence.

Just when we thought the sighting couldn’t possibly improve, she climbed into yet another perfect branch, this time framed against pastel sunset skies.

Every leopard sighting is special. But this one? This was pure magic, I truly couldn’t have imagined a more spectacular way for my third group to begin their safari.

Another incredible morning here spent with one of the many lion prides this concession homes. These images were captured only minutes before we watched the pride successfully hunt a warthog right in front of us.

However, I have decided to save you from the blood and gore and opted to share some of the more artistic backlit images instead, which is definitely my preference of shot.

Time to get a little more creative… it is too easy to just keep shooting more portraits in pretty soft light of common subjects so this morning I challenged our vehicle to shoot straight into the sun, despite it already being quite high in the sky, and this was the result.

What do you think? I appreciate it’s not everyone’s ’cup of tea ‘ in terms of image style.
