When the very first frame of the day looks like this, you just get the feeling it might be a good day!

This is the beautiful Kyyavera, the first of the six incredible jaguars we encountered yesterday at Porto Jofre. My love of this magical place has truly been reignited over the past couple of weeks.

It’s one of the few wildlife success stories that really deserves to be celebrated. Through the hard work, dedication and persistence of NGOs, naturalists, boat drivers and guides, jaguar numbers and sightings here have increased dramatically over the years.

Living alongside an apex predator will always bring challenges, and coexistence is rarely straightforward, but it is through education, rather than persecution, that attitudes have changed and these magnificent animals have been given a chance to thrive. Perhaps most importantly, conservation here must go hand in hand with the people who have called the Pantanal home for centuries and whose livelihoods remain intrinsically linked to this extraordinary place.

We are incredibly lucky to be visiting at such a special moment in the history of this remarkable place, witnessing the results of years of conservation work and, hopefully, being part of a future where these magnificent cats can continue to thrive. It is nothing less than a privilege to be here and has only heightened my excitement of returning next year and in 2028 with more groups.

I present to you… the often underrated and overlooked Gentoo penguin! 🐧

Having worked on the Antarctic Peninsula for many years, where Gentoos are one of the penguins you encounter most frequently, I sometimes feel these little characters don’t get quite the appreciation they deserve.

But honestly… how could you not love them?They’re incredibly curious, full of personality and wonderfully expressive, making them an absolute joy to photograph, and as you’ll see from this selection, they certainly know how to work a camera!

Sadly, when I visited Sea Lion Island in February, the Gentoo population was noticeably lower than in previous years, largely due to the impact of avian influenza. It was heartbreaking to see the difference, but thankfully there were still plenty of these little superstars around to keep my memory cards busy.

I’m really looking forward to heading back with my group in October to see how the colony is recovering. Until then, here’s a little Gentoo appreciation post because these guys deserve their moment in the spotlight! 🐧✨❤️

Same beach. Same penguins. Different light. Different story.

Weather has an incredible way of changing not just a photograph, but the feeling it evokes.

A few soft clouds drifting across a blue sky, or a single shaft of light breaking through a dark horizon, can completely change the mood of an image.

Most people hope for endless sunshine when they travel. I’m the opposite. Give me a dramatic, brooding sky or wispy clouds catching the first or last light of the day, and I'm happy.

The one thing we can't control is the weather and, if we're honest, the forecast often gets it wrong anyway, the best thing you can do is embrace whatever nature gives you.

A little flashback to one of those truly magical evenings in the Falklands earlier this year.

It had been howling with rain for almost the entire day, and I’d all but given up hope of finding any atmospheric light to photograph. I was just about ready to call it a day when I noticed a small break in the cloud on the horizon. It was enough to give me a glimmer of hope that we might still be treated to a beautiful sunset. True to Falklands form, the weather changed in an instant.

Within minutes, the landscape was bathed in the most incredible golden light. The ground was absolutely waterlogged, but there was no way I was letting that stop me. I spent the final 40 minutes of the day happily lying in the soaking wet grass, watching the king penguins make their way between the shoreline and the colony as the light became more magical by the minute.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the Falklands, it’s this: never give up on the weather. It can change completely in the blink of an eye.

I can’t wait to share these incredible islands with my group this October. My only advice in terms of your packing list is …Pack for all four seasons... and be prepared to wear every single one of them in the space of an afternoon! 🇫🇰🐧🌅

International Tiger Day 🐅

Today is a reminder that these incredible animals need more than our admiration, they need our protection.

Wild tiger populations have made encouraging progress in some areas thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, but they still face major threats from habitat loss, poaching and human-wildlife conflict. By raising awareness, supporting conservation organisations and promoting responsible wildlife tourism, we can all play a part in helping ensure future generations can experience these magnificent cats in the wild.

Photographing a tiger in its natural habitat is an experience that stays with you forever. There is nothing quite like the moment you lock eyes with one of these majestic creatures.

If that’s on your wildlife photography bucket list, I’d love for you to join me on one of my ‘Magical Bandhavgarh’ departures. All four of my 2027 trips are completely sold out, but I’m still have a few spots for the taking on my April 2028 trips.

A few highlights from my recent season in Torres del Paine, leading my Walking with Pumas trips.

It remains one of the most breathtaking places on Earth to search for big cats. So often, while we were out scouting, I found myself lowering my binoculars for a moment, not because there wasn't a puma to look for, but because I simply needed to take in the sheer magnificence of where I was standing.

Mother Nature was incredibly kind to both of my groups this season, treating us to daily puma sightings, but for me, these experiences have never been about the numbers. On several occasions we spent hours in the company of these remarkable animals, watching them rest peacefully, following them across their territory as they scent-marked, or sitting patiently as they stalked guanaco. To spend such prolonged periods with wild pumas often as the only group present, with no crowds or unnecessary noise, is something I will never take for granted.

As extraordinary as the season was, it also brought some deeply heartbreaking moments. Like so many places where I work, the growing conflict between people and wildlife is becoming impossible to ignore.
While we were in the field, a beautiful female puma was struck and killed by a speeding vehicle, leaving her young son orphaned. On another occasion, we watched in horror as a female became entangled in one of the many unnecessary wire fences that scar the landscape. Witnessing moments like these first-hand is deeply upsetting, and the saddest part is that they are becoming increasingly common.

As someone who naturally tries to remain optimistic, I still find myself wondering what the future holds for these magnificent cats. If we are serious about safeguarding their future, meaningful change is needed and urgently. Better road awareness,wildlife-friendly fencing, and continued conservation efforts will all play a vital role.

If this season reinforced anything for me, it is just how precious these opportunities are. Every moment spent alongside these incredible animals feels like a gift, and I feel immensely grateful that my guests and I were able to experience them together.

There’s a rare kind of humility that comes from being face to face with any apex predator but when you are on foot, you’re quickly reminded that you’re not the protagonist, but nothing more than a respectful visitor in their realm.

I have been blessed with several such encounters over the past few years, and yesterday with Petaka was no exception. In that moment, exhilaration, respect, and vulnerability becomes one and I warn you, that emotion it’s completely addictive.

I fall in love with this place more everyday, when the time comes I will be so sad to leave.

A family portrait…Just moments after this image was taken, Escacha and her two young cubs crossed the frozen river. She didn’t lead them step by step or carry them through the uncertainty. Instead, she waited calmly on the opposite bank, giving them the space to discover their own courage.

It was a beautiful reminder that strength is often nurtured through trust and patience. Watching this new generation of pumas grow, learn, and find their place in the wild is one of the greatest privileges. I wish these two youngsters every bit of luck as they begin their journey in the landscape they call home.
