The Galapagos Tortoise is the world's largest tortoise and can only be found in the Galapagos Islands west of South America. The tortoises will spend the cooler parts of the day low on the islands where it is dry and grassy, as the day warms up the tortoises will head to higher elevations where the vegetation is more lush. They usually travel the same path to these locations and will wear a path in the ground. Breeding season is January through August and the female will lay up to 10 eggs.

Surprisingly, guinea pigs are not related to pigs, nor did they originate in Guinea. Though they no longer exist in the wild, guinea pigs are cavies indigenous to South America, with fossil records dating back to 9,000 B.C. Domestication began around 5,000 B.C. for food by tribes in the Andean region and remain a popular food source in South America today. There are 13 recognized breeds of guinea pig, and each is characterized by differences in hair color, texture, sheen and patterns present. Guinea pigs are very social animals and are popular as household pets in Western societies.

Two-toed sloths are animals of extremes. They sleep 15-20 hours a day, climb 6-8 feet per minute, take 1 month to digest food, use the bathroom every 4-8 days, and have one of the lowest body temperatures of any mammal ranging from 74-92 degrees depending on their environment. Little is known about sloth reproduction but babies begin to eat solid food at 1 month old and will become independent at about 9 months old. They reach full size at 2-3 years of age. Sloths have poor sight and hearing but a great sense of smell.

The American Alligator was on the verge of extinction in the 1970’s. The alligator was placed on the Endangered Species list and has since made a remarkable recovery.

An easy way to distinguish alligators from crocodiles is to look at their teeth. Alligators and crocodiles have a very long fourth tooth. When an alligator closes its mouth that tooth is not visible, when a crocodile closes its mouth that tooth is visible from its upper jaw. Alligators can have up to 80 teeth in their mouth at one time and have over 2000 pounds of bite strength. Alligators will become dormant when the weather gets too cold for them. They dig “gator holes” that can be 65 feet long which they use during periods of dormancy.

1) Zebras are members of the equid family which includes horses and donkeys. They are largely grazers and eat the tops of grasses were they live. Each zebra has a different pattern of stripes on their coat. This is called disruptive camouflage. The main predator of zebra are lions who like to hunt for zebra as the sun goes down. Zebra’s stripes help them to blend into tall grasses where they live and confuse the lions. Zebra live in large herds and their stripes make it hard for lions to track a zebra to hunt for a meal when following a large herd. They also have other defenses against predators including great hearing and eyesight, a top speed of 35 miles per hour, and a kick that can seriously injure a predator. Zebra can give birth anytime during the year and will usually give birth to one foal which stays with their mother for up to 3 years.

2) The bontebok was nearly extinct in the wild but the creation of Bontebok National Park and breeding on game farms led to the current population of over 2,000 existing throughout southern Africa. Their current conservation status includes the closely related blesbok of which 250,000 exist. They graze during the day on grasses in small groups of about 10. Males will mark their territory with dung and participate in challenge rituals with neighboring males. Both males and females will grow horns.

Green Crested Basilisk: The basilisk is known for its ability to run over water. Long legs and long toes with fringed scales allows the lizard to not break the surface of the water as they run across it at 7 miles per hour on their rear legs. As they slow down they move to all fours and eventually start swimming. This behavior is used to either escape predators or find food. Basilisks are great swimmers and can be in the water for up to 30 minutes. Female basilisks will lay 15-17 eggs at a time and she can lay up to 5 clutches of eggs per breeding season.

Andean bears, sometimes known as spectacled bears, can be recognized by the rings of lightly-colored fur around their eyes and are the only bears native to South America. They are considered to be the most herbivorous of all bear species after giant pandas, as well as the most arboreal, searching for food in trees and building leafy platforms to feed and sleep on. These bears play an important role in forest ecology because of their diet: as they travel, they disperse seeds in their droppings, maintaining the presence of fruit trees in the forest.

The southern pudu is one of the world’s smallest deer, measuring just 14-17 inches in height at the shoulder. They are normally solitary, but may travel in small groups of 2-3 to feed. Males use pronounced pre-orbital glands on their head for scent-marking of territory. Pudus play an important role in their habitat, as they build and maintain tunnels in the underbrush, allowing other small animals to pass through and remain undetected by predators.

Aldabra tortoises are one of the largest tortoises in the world found only on the island of Aldabra. These tortoises are keystone species in their habitat and they play a role similar to that of elephants in opening up paths for smaller animals in their habitats. Females will lay 4-15 eggs, young aldabra tortoises are a fraction of their parents size weighing in at just a few ounces. The lifespan of aldabra tortoises is unknown because they outlive scientists that research them!

The Rhinoceros Iguana gets its name from the bumps on its snout which are most pronounced on male iguanas. Breeding will happen at 2 to 3 years of age. Males bob their heads and their spines along their back to attract females. Females will dig burrows to incubate the eggs, there is no parental care after the eggs hatch. Rhinoceros iguanas are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They spend their nights in rock crevices, caves, or burrows they have dug. Rhinoceros iguanas are threatened by habitat destruction, invasive species, and illegal hunting.

Swipe ➡️➡️➡️Red-ruffed lemurs are 1 of more than 100 species of lemurs on the island of Madagascar. Lemurs are not monkeys but a type of primate called a prosimian. Red-ruffed lemurs will spend most of their day in the canopies of forests and they play an important role in pollination in their habitat. Red-ruffed lemurs are very vocal, with the ability to make more than 12 separate calls. These are used to warn others of predators, keep the group together while foraging, or to warn others that a space is already occupied.
