It’s always exciting to come back to the farm. Last night was even more so! Elephants have been creating havoc in the fields for a while now, so all farmers are in a heightened state of alertness. It has just started to drizzle and at 9.30 pm I heard a metallic clank at the small gate. I quickly ran out with the torch and saw this huge tusker - a moment later it just melted into the darkness. Would it come back ? Sure it did - at 3.30 am ! Again the sound of the gate alerted me. I ran out but couldn’t see the animal but the gate was open . Inspection in the morning revealed that the tusker had probably just ambled over the fence and gone to check the mango tree ( which has been valiantly struggling to survive for over a decade now ! ) . And decided to open the gate and vanish into the darkness - just checking - “ hello hello hello - is there anybody in there !!! 😂 “

On our morning walk at 6.30 am, fresh leopard tracks greeted us a few hundred metres from the house. Kanmani drew my attention to the s**t - confirming that it must be a large male. Possibly the same leopard which had in August killed a wild boar piglet just outside our fence at 5.30 pm when we were having coffee on the varendah .

Lammergeier or bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) , Hanley, Ladakh, November 2022. With a wingspan ranging between 7 and 9 feet , this vulture specializes in feeding on bones, dropping them from the sky to break the bones in order to get to the marrow.
