Neelam was just getting ready for her afternoon nap as she settled down in a little puddle in the shade.

Tigers love their naps and rest breaks during the day. They have their usual resting spots around their territory with great shade and access to water as the temperatures soar past 40C at Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

•A Dhole couple•

We had a wonderful sighting of a pack of 6 wild dogs (Dhole). This family had 4 shy pups along with Mum and Dad.

The couple stayed on the road for close to 10 minutes urging their pups to climb out of the gorge on the left and onto the road to continue on their morning patrol.

While they waited for their pups we got a chance to observe the bond they shared and how they display affection to each other and how they tried to encourage their pups to get out on the road.

More pictures to come on this. Stay tuned.

•The Flying Bird•

Named ‘flying bird’ due to a mark on her flank in the shape of a flying bird, A dashing young tigress trying to hold onto her territory in the RuniJhuni section of Pench national Park! The territory is currently being retaken by her from a tigress with 3 cubs.

Had a fantastic sighting of close to 20 minutes while she marked her territory, stalked some deer and walked passed our jeep almost as if we never existed. Except for this little eye contact she made.

Pelicans of Vedanthangal

A hidden jewel of sorts tucked away just a few kilometres from Chennai is a birding enthusiast’s paradise! Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is said to be India’s oldest bird sanctuary and home to close to 30,000+ migratory birds visiting from the furthest corners of the planet!

The growing developments from the neighbouring Chennai city threatens the ecosystem on a regular basis but has managed to survive and hold its own for many years this far.

•Tourism Tiger | Tiger Tourism •

A lot of people who have not been on game drives into the jungles imagine these tigers to be savage beasts who would attack you for no reason but on the contrary they have beautifully managed to keep us paparazzi at a safe distance and lead their lives just as normally as if we never existed. They have beautifully managed to lead their lives as naturally as they could around the intruding wildlife enthusiasts and tourist vehicles that enter these protected areas in vast numbers everyday.

This I believe is a delicate balancing act that is essential for the tigers to stand a better chance of survival of their species. While a lot of it is debatable on how tourism is today and how it should be done, it’s important for those visiting these protected areas to absorb how fragile these ecosystems are due to the close proximity of unsustainable and rapid human expansion and how important these apex predators are for us to enjoy clean air and water and how all of this is connected in a delicate balance.

A white eye buzzard(Juvenile)

Juveniles have a brown Iris and as they grow into their adult plumage their Iris turns white! How amazing is that ?!

These birds feed on rodents, insects and small mammals.

•The Winter Male•

It was a cold winter evening and he was in search of a mate. He walked along the road for a long time along the same direction that a tigress had passed.

This is D2 a growing and handsome young Male that is paving his way to find a place in the competitive Bandhavgarh territorial circuit!

I look forward to seeing more of him as he ages.

That electric blue bird!

It was my 10th game drive in the ever so beautiful Bandhavgarh national park, It was an extremely cold winter morning and and I were tracking families of tigers through pug marks they left behind for us to follow. We had just 1 sighting of a tiger in 9 game drives but we didn’t give up!
Although we were the first jeep in at Tala we didn’t have much luck as these cheeky families of tigers and their cubs had given us the slip!
The search for the frame I wanted for a family of tigers in winter light was proving to be a lot harder than I thought.
Although we didn’t have luck with the tigers we did find some other beautiful creatures basking in the little pockets of sunshine that would find its way through the Sal trees as the winter cold was biting not just me but them too!

This electric blue winged bird is called the ‘White throated Kingfisher’. The interesting thing about this Kingfisher is that they can be found where there isn’t too large a water body too as they would happily feed on insects, rodents, reptiles and amphibians and they occasionally prey on smaller birds too!

•The Greater Racket Tailed Drongo•

Such a cool name to have for a bird isn’t it?! This guy has 2 long streamers from his tail that look like rackets and they look gorgeous in action!

More than just the looks this species is extremely talented with its voice, they can mimic more than 12+ birds and other sounds too! They don’t do this for fun but they mimic birds with whom they feed to distract them while feeding so they can quickly grab what they have caught or found!
These birds are usually found in woodlands and they join babblers and woodpeckers during feeding time and capitalise on the opportunities that other birds find.

These birds are also extremely agile in the air and can do some crazy inflight manoeuvres! These are great birds to observe.

Please do share your learning’s about this bird in the comments below!
