My click in Indian Express 35 years back at Bangalore airport (HAL airport). That day I took a dayoff after a long gape and gave my mopad for service , had an haircut and like to have a siesta after lunch and door knocked. It was Indian Express librarian soughting to rush (no phone, use to take 10 years after applying for one). When I reached and passed the police corridors this was the scene, charred bodies, letters, Posts, baggages, big wheels and planes parts all over.

Small one is not a baby, it's just a male spider: A week back I saw this male signature spider built a web a feet away adjoining from the female signature spider web. Female was huge compared to the male and male took four days to come to this close. It seems they need the single from the female. Meanwhile I read some articles on how the male approach the female and it have s*x after getting signal from female. It seems the female will kill the male after having s*x and lay egg on the companion web build by the male. So I got curious, I was watching every now and then for four days. Nothing happened and though the male looked very close from an angle, in reality it was maintaining a distance and it was waiting on the other side of web. Day before yesterday as soon as I finished my online class rushed to see for any update. But to my surprise male was missing. Killed and eaten? Preyed by some other insect / bird? I have no answer. Female still at large, resting on the web after doing a missing act for a day (on that rainy and windy day) .

Today 19th November is Former Prime minister Indira Gandhi's Birth anniversary. Today while I was deleting some emails to make some space, I bump into this mail (my story on Indira Gandhi) which I sent it to then Resident Editor, The Hindu Bangalore on14/09/2012. What a coincidence. (I forgot whether it's published or not)

Dear Parvathi
See if it can be of use.
Gopinathan K

AMMA IS NO MORE : 28 years back, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to inaugurate the All India Mahila Congress convention at Palace Ground in Bangalore on 15th September 1984. I was thrilled and looking forward for that day as it is going to be my first photograph of a Prime Minister. Margret Alva (later Union Minister and Governor of Rajasthan) who was in charge of the event and I got a photographer pass from the organisers of the function.

Indira Gandhi arrived; first, she took a salute to the national flag, I was charged up , took my first picture of a Prime Minister in my life and then she went into the venue thronged by women from all over the country. There were many women stood outside the venue as there is hardly any place left inside. Looking at the PM, I noticed she looked little disturbed for some reason; she was not the women I imagined on that day. An Elderly women try to reach her was sent back a photo op gone. I kept clicking pictures with the national and local photographers, even asked a photographer to take a photo of mine with Indira in the background. I noticed, one senior photographer went to a police official and whispered some thing pointing a finger on me. The unbelievable happened. The cop came straight to me and asked for the pass. I showed the big pass in my possession. "Show me the badge the other photographers have", before I could talk, man in Khaki dragged me holding my collar like a criminal and pushed me out side the venue. I was hurt; confused, do not know what to do. I could see some seniors laughing. With a heavy heart, cursing the senior photographer and the Policemen, I stood out. I never expected the very first experience with the PM was a disaster. While waiting outside, I was praying that I should get one good picture of the PM to beat the my Seniors. I waited outside till the function got over; Policemen came out, then the PM’s guards and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Women who were standing outside suddenly become frenzy, want to touch Indira Gandhi, some want to fall on her feet. I got sandwiched between them, it was suffocating but desperately trying to get a picture. I saw, Indira Gandhi dodging them and running away from the crowd, lifting her sarry a little. Ideal picture to beat my rivals, No time lost to think, I manage to get one frame before her guards and police men pounced on me and pushed me in to the crowd making way for the Prime Minister. My entire office colleagues at The City Tab, shouted with joy when they saw the photograph and start giving a catchy head line for the picture. "PM on her heel" was the headline appeared finally. Thanks to my seniors, I got a good picture of my life, “Patients pays, never loos heart in a situation like this” a lesson I learnt. I was full of joy when I saw my work on the front page of my weekly newspaper The City Tab with a good display.

I heard the shocking news of Indira Gandhi’s assassination in Delhi on 31st October1984, just a month after her last visit to Bangalore. A Colour front page scheduled on that week for my newspaper was withdrawn in a hurry and a black and white picture, my first picture of PM, taking salute to National flag was replaced with a headline, "Amma is No More". Some memories cant be forgotten.

I'm confused whether it is Cyclosa spider or something else found in my garden for last two weeks. Google lens nearly matches Cyclosa. Some one currect me if I'm wrong.
(Cyclosa conica is a small spider with no common name. It is an orb weaver, and it is easily recognized by the way it strings together the dead bodies of insects and other debris and hangs it near the center of its web. It hides on this string of debris, and its natural coloration makes it extremely difficult to see until it moves. One of its defenses against predators is to blend in with this debris and to feign death when disturbed. These spiders are small; the females range from 5.3 mm to 7.5 mm, and the males range from 3.6 mm to 4 mm... Wikipedia)

Why this "Kolai veri" (urge to kill)?
Yesterday morning I saw this Orb spider in my garden even at 9am (I was observed this one for more than a week, when sun brightens, it used to hide behind plants leaves). When I had a closer look I noticed it had got a prey, a stink bug I think. I took one or two pictures of it rolling the prey in the silk thread and went inside. After an hour I saw some movement, still rolling down the prey which was un familiar to me. After 2 and half hours I was surprised to see it literally tear down the thorax part of the bug. As a lay man, all along I believed spider inject a venom to kill/freeze on it's prey and suck down the juices from the body. Never expect it tear down the body. While I went into change the battery and come back it dissappeared (might have fallen). Searched the Google to find this story. "Myth: Spiders do not literally eat the insects they kill; they only suck the "juices" or blood." If you are interested go through...

Today's visitor in my tiny garden. Is it the Japanese beetle / Popillia japonica ? copper-colored elytra and a green thorax and head. If so what's Japanese Beetle doing in my garden, is it a common species in India. Need confirmation from the experts. Pic taken with Nikon D3400 with kit lens 18-55mm magnifier attached.

Jumping spider (Hyllus semicupreus I think) with a prey almost 3 time's bigger than it's size. Is it Black Soldier fly I wonder. Pic taken in my garden with entry level DSLR camera, kit lens 18-55mm and a cheap magnifier fitted over the lens. Camera inbuilt flasf was used as the lighting was very bad and result not a good quality.

Part 2 LTTE : Drama in real life: Shivarasan caught: ****continued from yesterday....
New comers go through yesterday article first :

I too crawled and reached a wood cutter shop but saw huge crowd gathered there. Saw my reporting colleague Nagaraj and we both decided to leave for a safe hideout. We crawled, reached a place and settled behind bushes and a house in our back is closed and dark, we decided to settle there and hide from police who now started clearing all public and media men to far away.

We can't talk loud now, we can only whisper. Suddenly, some thing strike me, the mother and daughter who were crossing when the firing started, what could have happened to them, have they escaped? When I was telling this to my friend we hear a voice from behind the closed doors of the house. "We are here inside sir, we are scared, please come in". I am double happy that they are safe and I got a place to hide from police but can still watch for action from the house. As we settled in, lights are switched off in the house as per police instruction, they blocked the windows with news paper and lit only a chimney lamp we
could hardly see their faces. They offered the left over food, I realized that I didn't had food from morning could not resist and both of us shared the little food. It was almost mid night I heard a shot and told my friend he denied that was not a gun shot.( later come to know all of the inmates in that cornered house committed su***de by cyanide capsule and the brain behind the show shot him self dead).
Mean time other photographers and my colleagues complained to police that I am missing and news seem to be flashed in the wireless too. Early in the morning we still hoping for some action and waiting with the camera on, I could hear a familiar voice calling my name in a low sound and it seems he is crime reporter Madhusoodan (my good friend and we had done several stories together which I will write later days) going with a small torch searching house to house giving a call to me. I opened the door and drag him in. He is happy that we're alive and wanted me to come to the police out post erected nearby which are a safe place he promised. We moved and could here the messages passing by the police wireless. I came to know about the Special task force is arriving from Nagpur and there wont be
any action till then.
Its morning and about to sunrise they reached the spot, I sneek out settled in to half constructed house where local police are all set with their gun. I could see STF men claiming up the house about to throw a bomb like thing inside from roof top.

An anti climax
Some one dragged me from behind, It's a police official. Shankar Bhidiri, I pleaded, begged with him just give me a second, he didn't leave me there, I missed the right moment, cursing my fate and the official and my crime reporter who forced me to come out of the house. Back to the police out post, I could hear from the wireless of police officials that the operation is over. All the LTTE men found
dead consumed cyanide and the one eyed jack Shivarasan was shot him self dead last. (That was the gun shot I hear in the middle of the night). We were not allowed to go any way near by till the bodies were
brought out and lay down to be photographed. It's only after 24 hours
after I reached the spot I could get the picture of only the dead bodies of master mind behind the killing of late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi (I reached the spot on 19th August which is World Photography Day and got the pic on 20th August which is Late Prime minister Rajeev Gandhi's Birth Anniversary, what a coincidence).
Dissapointed for not getting good action, But it's a great experience for me and others too. Is there a profession where you can see, interact and learn in depth about various things, sections of people? I think it's only a news photographer who has this privilege; they are really the blessed.
Every day is new day, new experience and is a drama in real life. If the photographer can enjoy his work and work with interest its a great day every day what ever the subject may be, what ever the problem that come across looks like an adventure later.
I'm thankful to all my reporting and editorial colleagues who encouraged me, appreciated my work and stand behind me.
Special thanks to Sugandhi my colleague from The City Tab days, who encouraged me to write articles and polished my writing readable. This story I wrote for the Hindu Metroplus 19th August 2006 on world photography day.
Thank for your patience

Part 1 LTTE Drama in real life: Shivarasan Subha caught: warning, very long story.

It was my routine to call all the police control room, District control room and few police stations in the early mornings as soon as I reached office, I use to reach office as early as 8am. It was a long
practice since I joined the news photography from 1982 till date. On 19th August 1991, day surprisingly I didn't get any positive answers from the other side, senior officials are not available and at most of the police station staffs present in the stations refused to talk. This created some doubt in me that some thing major might have happened and they were instructed to divulge to the press. After wasting several calls, I called up a photographer of an evening news paper Baburaj of the Kannada evening news paper, We started a goose chase on a scooter.
As we passed few police stations gathered information that some thing big had happened and all officials rushed there last night itself on south direction. That's enough for us to select the direction to move. We start driving towards Kanakapura road.
As we are driving fast on Kanakapura road we saw one ambulance over took us and little later an another. That's it, I said to my friend 'lets follow the ambulance'. At last it took a diversion at the main road and led into a katcha road and we followed. Bingo, it was like an English movie scene, police and polices every where. We know that we
had reached the right spot but don't know what's happening.
After talking carefully without revealing our innocence came to know that all the police men are surrounded a house at Konanakunte and hoping that they had cornered Shivarasan the master mind behind Rajive Gandhi killing. Why should they believe that one eye jack Shivarasan, Shuba and their team are here?
After talking to the officials and locals we got the bits and pieces of stories. Police intelligence who had the address of the agent who got rented housed for LTTE men at Muthatti and other places trapped agent and they were almost close catching shivarasan but he changed the house, later they got the clue that he shifted to Kanananakunte.
Without delay they cornered the entire area previous night and did the wait and watch. Early in the morning an auto riksa came to the house but hurriedly left. With the help of locals they stopped the auto and took the inmate and driver to custody well outside area without creating any suspicion to the in mates. Some believed to swallow the
poisoness cyanide capsule and now admitted in the hospital. Why they
are not acting? Why they still waiting? I asked a police officials. We are not hundred percent sure its shivarasan and his gang and can't act without higher up order.
I could see police man casually walk around the house, claiming up the compound to get up to the terrace of the house, which made me think that it may be a wild goose chase. As we are the first one to reach I clicked away the exterior of the house, police claiming up and down the house with arms, taking position around the house. But don't want to exhaust roles, so I settled. The other photographer Baburaj who waited till
noon left for office with him I passed my negative role to be handed over to my darkroom assistant Manjunath and settled there.
As I was waiting boringly with out any action for long, I even slanted
over the compound wall of the house and noticed the window opened a
little and close. For me it looked like some one was peeping out. I immediately called the police official standing near by and told him that I saw some one opened and closed the window. The official laughed
and said my men too said the same its "Brammhe" (illusion). He said "see it's going to be a waste, no one will there inside.
I don't want to leave the spot, if they are in and if there is an action I want to
be the only man to get the pictures. I skip my lunch too. Time passed, I starved but got some water from the police official standing near by.
News started spreading and photographers from rival papers started arriving one by one in the evening. I could see many reporters around; two of my reporting colleagues arrived too. One came to me (I think it's Nagaraj BS) and I briefed him what happened from morning. As we were conversing, sun started setting and it's about to get darker I saw a mother and her teen age daughter crossing the foot route just before the house which is the focus of
interest of everyone. I told my reporter, how careless they are, suppose there is really LTTE men inside and if they take them as
hostage what is the plight of the police! I had not completed the sentence, we could here firing from the house and soon after police seen firing back. Gun shot from the house didn't created any fear in me because the shot I hear was sounded like Dipawali small crackers but not like a filmy "Dusheem, Dusheem" one which we use to see often and belive.
As police men taking position behind a compound nearby, few took the
near by roof tops, a half finished house come handy for the armed police man to hide and shoot back. Things changed within no time, there is drama in real life, could see people running for shelter, police started announcing in the public system to switch off lights from the houses, cleared every one around the house from where
the shooting took place. I was thrilled because I might get some picture for my news paper but the tragedy is light has fallen down and I want the action to happen in reachable distance for my flash and
camera lens. I went behind a thin stone slab erected as compound on an empty site. I
looked around to notice all other photographers too occupying behind
the stone slabs which is around 200 or 300 feet away from the house. I could
also see Door Dharshan Photographer, a reporter and Photographer seen
behind a big compound wall little further a safe place to take picture and hide. But its too late for me to leave the place, the armed men might come out any time. Yes, it happened again, they came out, shouted some thing like "Vangada, Vangada" and started shooting with the machine
gun. Police shot back, now we could only see only the flares of the gun shot and its becoming darker and darker, I know I cant get any pictures with 100 ASA film and my flash cant reach such distance but kept
shooting hoping with some miracle I may get a frame, still praying god let them come near so that I can get a picture of the day. Gun shots stopped and I looked for other photographers, I could see none standing near by. They must have gone for a safe shelter or driven away by the police.
Now I was left behind and in a dilemma to leave or not leave, I could here police warning in the public system to clear from the vicinity, I sat down and hide from the police, some of the police men who noticed
my present and got down to clear me from the hiding but fell flat when the another round of firing from the house, now I could see police men lay down flat, injured or dead and could see a bullets striking a rock
very near to me making a sound like CLING, CLING just few feet away from where I was standing, It's so near to me, a buffalo lay dead near by but not sure its buffalo or only a rock it's dark. Some thing blocked my
throat, is it fear? Firing stopped from either side, I could see some one running towards me, and it's my colleague Natchi. He shouted standing from the road with his big belly, Gopi come back, otherwise
you get hit by bullets, I shouted back, Nachi go back, they can see you, I saw him crawling back. An ambulance van arrived and took away the injured police man laying down on the road, (they got bravery
award later). Though I want to stick on, I know at any time I will be cleared by police, so decided to hide from the police and find a safe place to wait and take pictures, still expected that the armed men may come out to escape which may give an opp for me take some picture. There was long silence, I too crawled and reached a wood
cutter shop but saw huge crowd gathered there. I met my reporter colleague Nagaraj and..... For Rest wait till tomorrow 😊

Morning I heard strange bird calls when I was just back from a short outing and washing my, footwears, hands, mask and glass before entering the house. Two black birds seated on the electric wires making that calls. I never tried bird photography, I mean flying. Hurried in to pic my camera with 70-300 mm Kit lens (unfortunately, my lens autofocus mechanism don't work instead shakes violently and at extreme zoom end, 300mm side it do not focus. But this is the lens I used for most of my work in Covid-19 era). I Managed to get very few shot before it flew away to a tree faraway. In that process I made one and half stop under exposed. With Google lens help I found its Drongos (my knowledge in bird photography is very very limited).
I went through an article by Kannan AS, it's very interesting.
Drongos are instantly identifiable with a black or dark grey body and a forked tail. They are insectivorous and catch their prey on the wing or on the ground. All drongos are placed in a family called Dicruridae, combining the Ancient Greek words dikros ‘forked’ and oura ‘tail’. Some species are accomplished mimics and have a variety of alarm calls, to which other birds and animals often respond. There is evidence that they utter hoax alarm calls that typically scare other animals off food, which the drongos then eat.

Hight of foolishness, I waited for the Bitter Melon to come out. Lovely yellowish flowers all over the plants and insects visitors pollinating made my expectation higher (bee left and Spotted Beet Webworm Moth, HYMENIA PERSPECTALIS right) but nothing coming up for weeks passed by, only flowers falling out after two days. I only realised after reading some articles, that they are all male flowers with the pollens but no female flowers (which will have a miniature bitter milon under the flower) to be pollinate. I console my self that even the leaves have medicinal properly at least used to make tea out of it.

Update: Today 4/08 /2020 I found one female flower and I pollinate from a male flower manually (cut one male flower, bend down the pedals and rub the pollens over female flower). Attached a photo of the female flower.
Bitter melon leaves are a good source of vitamin A and also contain vitamin C and iron.
Bitter melon fruits and leaves have long been used in the Amazon for their medicinal properties. In Peru, the leaves are used as an anti-viral aid to help reduce symptoms of measles and malaria. In Nicaragua, Bitter melon leaves are also used to help reduce symptoms of diabetes, hypertension, and to aid in childbirth. Bitter melon leaves are typically dried and used as a tea or ground into a paste when used as a medicinal aid.
