There’s a little anatomical quirk in the human arm that sounds almost made up: a tendon that some people simply don’t have. It belongs to the palmaris longus tendon, a thin, rope-like structure running down the forearm to the palm. The palmaris longus muscle itself is considered a vestigial structure—meaning it once had a clearer function in our evolutionary past (likely helping with grip strength in tree-climbing ancestors), but today it’s largely unnecessary. Because of that, evolution has gotten a bit casual about keeping it around. Roughly 10–30% of people are missing this tendon in one or both arms, depending on the population. What’s interesting is that most people never notice whether they have it or not. It doesn’t significantly affect strength or hand function. In fact, surgeons often take advantage of its expendability: if someone needs a tendon graft (for example, in reconstructive hand surgery), the palmaris longus is commonly harvested because removing it doesn’t cause meaningful loss.
