Mishmi Wren Babbler
Scientific name : Spelaeornis badeigularis

Conservation Status : Near Threatened

Found in Mishmi Hills, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Extremely range-restricted.
Habitat : Dense, wet undergrowth of subtropical/temperate broadleaf forest. Usually 1700–2400m elevation.

Looks : Small, dark, stub-tailed wren-babbler. Rufous-chestnut throat with black spotting at lower edge, giving the badei spotted throat name. Dark brown upperparts, paler underparts with heavy white spotting. Shy and skulking.

Behavior : Stays near ground in thickets. Song is a high-pitched, thin, rapid warble. Like other _Spelaeornis_, very tough to see.

Why it matters
It was described in 1947 from a single specimen, then "lost" for 57 years. Rediscovered in 2004 near Roing by scientists from BNHS. Only a handful of confirmed sightings since. Habitat loss from shifting cultivation, road building, and logging is the main threat.

Mishmi Wren Babbler vs Rusty-throated Wren Babbler
They were once considered the same species. Mishmi has a darker throat with black spots vs clean rufous throat on Rusty-throated. Range also separates them — Mishmi is east of the Dibang River, Rusty-throated is west.

While doing bird photography in Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary Darjeeling West Bengal came across this natural beauty.

Rivers carve landscapes They erode mountains, carry silt, and build fertile floodplains and deltas that feed billions through agriculture.

They’re natural highways From ancient trade routes to modern hydroelectric dams, rivers shape economies, cities, and cultures along their banks.

They’re living systems A river isn’t just water - it’s fish, sediment, seasonal floods, and a shifting record of the land it travels through.
