Our weekly tip - how to choose the right lens for your next trip?
Each tour comes with a great excitement, but for us photographers it also comes with a great dillema - which lens or lenses should i take with me and do i even own the desired lens.
There isn't an easy answer but here is what we can suggest based on our experience and our travellers experience:
While choosing the right lens for a trip there are several parameters we need to consider (in this tip we put the economic aspect aside)
- what is the main subject of our trip or destination, is it Macro? People? Wildlife? or maybe architecture?
We need to fit our lens length to the subject we want to shoot.
If we have a lot of subjects, our lens length, or zoom
difference would be greater (18-200 for example)
This will of course affect the quality of the picture, as fix lens has the best quality but worst flexibility.
- Weight - we usually forget to consider this matter, and unneeded extra weight will effect our body and soul. taking too much might be as worst as forgetting a lens at home.
Don't take all the equipment you have, check beforehand and don't carry unnecessary things.
- Character of the tour - choosing a lens is also affected from the character of the tour. is it a family trip? are we going with other photographers? are we going to spend most of the time laying on the beach? it is important to consider the character of the destination and the people we are travelling with.
- Local culture - we should choose the right equipment considering what is accepted in our destinations, some tribes for example will be intimidated by flash photography.
But the most important tip - we believe the the photographer is what makes the photo and not the equipments.
Sometimes the ability to enjoy your trip is exactly opposite to the amount of equipment you are taking with you.
Enjoy your next trip!
