לא רק דגים במקורו...
כשחושבים על תוכי הים האטלנטי (Atlantic Puffin), בדרך כלל מדמיינים מקור עמוס בדגים. אבל בעונת הקינון אפשר לראות אותו נושא גם עשב, גבעולים וחומר צמחי אחר, המשמשים לריפוד מחילת הקינון.
לא ניתן להבדיל בין זכר לנקבה על פי המראה בלבד, וגם אין לכך חשיבות רבה. שני בני הזוג שותפים מלאים: הם מרפדים את המחילה, דוגרים על הביצה היחידה ומטפלים יחד בגוזל עד שהוא עוזב את הקן.
Not Just Fish
When we think of the Atlantic Puffin, we usually picture it carrying a bill full of fish. But during the breeding season, puffins can also be seen carrying grass, stems, and other plant material to line their nesting burrows.
It is not possible to distinguish males from females by appearance alone—and in this case, it hardly matters. Both parents share the work: lining the burrow, incubating their single egg, and caring for the chick until it leaves the nest.
