Mary’s Room

The philosophical thought experiment proposed by Frank Jackson known as Mary's Room describes Mary, a scientist who exists in a completely black and white environment. She has extensive scientific knowledge of the bio-mechanics and physics of color reception but no actual human perceptual experience of color. The central question of the thought experiment is whether Mary will gain new knowledge when she goes outside the black and white room and experiences color first-hand.

After the winter rains, wild carrot raises up lacy white parasols on long green stems. Now brown-withered by the scorch of summer, the evening breezes sweep at the clusters of them. And their big heads stretch up in unison before the sun as she sprawls corals and purples on the horizon.

There used to be a local spot we would go to pick fresh berries. Early was better, we would arrive before the crowds that came from out of town. But, the summer sun wasted no time heating the groves and it made us tread quietly with full focus on the task. We would pick the raspberries, delicate little gems and blackberries, large and ready to burst. My 9 year old daughter whispered to me through the dusty raspberry leaves, “ I love it here. This is a happy place for me.”

It was going to be a race. The sun was setting and I still had a tent to set up. There were only about 20minutes of light left. It seemed possible.
But, when the world in front of my eyes is this beautiful, if the sky is made of frosting and the sea is smoldering and the path is carving sharply through the rumpled greenery, I cannot resist indulging in a few mindful moments and taking the time to record it in a few photos.
Now, it lives on.
The sunset. And the memory. And, as a bonus, the ability to set up a tent in the black darkness.

I often comb the beach for an interesting shell or a small stone polished smooth by the sea. A precious find may make it’s way into my pocket and then be displayed at home. This beautiful thing came home with me by digital means.
