Salmon Season

The Sockeye Salmon run is coming to an end but there are still things happening out in nature in British Columbia.

After spawning, salmon will die and line the river banks. This brings in an array of predators that feed on the carcasses.
Bears and eagles will move dead salmon which will decay on the forest floor or river banks, acting as a natural fertiliser.

Even in death the salmon bring new life to the ecosystem.

Life in the fast lane, slowed down…

Some snippets from filming during the Sockeye salmon run at Adams river.
These fish have returned to the Adams river to spawn after spending the last 3 years in the Pacific Ocean.
Once they enter the river they stop feeding and their skin begins to change colour.

This is a dominant year for the sockeye spawning with their next return year being 2030.

Setting up for a shot of sockeye salmon running up river.

It’s incredible too witness the power of these salmon in such fast flowing environments, with the currents capable of causing anyone to float downstream.
Salmon are constantly in the current and still have bursts of energy to swim upstream over rapids.

This was an extra shot I wanted to capture of the salmon travelling upriver in the current past a cameras.
Exciting to watch them go past the camera while moving at speed in such a quick flow of water.

The light of the Pines

While filming Sockeye salmon I spent the nights camping, and after a long day in the river, found myself beside the camp fire looking up at the sky through the trees.

Looking at the clear skies above and the light from the campfire gave me the idea for this shot through the trees.
It also made me think of how many clear skies the sockeye salmon have passed under over thousands of years on their runs up the Fraser river.

A male sockeye salmon sitting in the current waiting to regain his strength.

Having spent the small amount of time lying in a cold river current, I now have a different level of appreciation for salmon.
The strength and resilience of these incredible fish to travel such massive distances in strong currents is remarkable.

After each rapid or falls that a salmon travels up through, they take a break to rest and regain strength to overcome the next one.
This male was doing exactly that, calmly getting closer and closer to me and my camera.
The bright red of his body filled most of my vision at points through my mask.

Finally had a chance to see and film the iconic Sockeye salmon.
From a very young age I have wanted to see sockeye salmon during the salmon run. This is when the sockeye return from sea to the river they were born in to spawn themselves.
For Sockeye salmon, this only happens every 4 years.
2026 is a dominant year.

Definitely some of the trickiest and most technically challenging filming I have done to date, but equally exciting to see these beautiful fish beneath the crystal clear waters of their spawning grounds.

Salmon Season 🐟

Haven’t been very active on here as of late but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy..

Salmon have been running, bears have been feeding, and camera has been rolling.

Looking forward to sharing what’s been going on behind the scenes.
