More often than not, a client sums up how a session went way better than I ever could, and Ryan did just that.

“Laura’s documentary-style photography perfectly captured how it felt to be in Ireland. The wind blowing across the soft grass, the sunlight glinting over the lake… these photos feel timeless and will be keepsakes that we’ll display forever.

Despite our toddler becoming ill and throwing up during the shoot, Laura was able to roll with the punches without missing a beat or feeling intrusive. The entirety of the shoot ended up telling a wonderful story of how our family cares for each other and deals with setbacks.”

I enjoy documenting various ways we uniquely show our love for these closest to us, both in the direct and indirect things we do.

We recently took a trip with my parents to the Noordoostpolder, one of the largest tulip growing regions in the Netherlands. I knew we would be seeing tulips, but I wasn’t prepared for just how many!

The fields looked like they’d been painted by someone with a passion for vibrant colours, sometimes then changing mid-row as if they were so excited to try out the new colour.

And the scent. For me that was the biggest surprise. I wouldn’t normally associate tulips with a strong fragrance, but when you are standing near fields filled with millions of them and the wind is blowing just right, well, the smell is just so sweet. It’s the kind of scent you’d love to bottle up and save for a grey day.

The bloom window only lasts a few weeks before the farmers deadhead the flowers (see the last image), and just like that, the canvas gets wiped clean and the bulbs start preserving their energy for next year.

A selection from my attempt of daily March photos.

Some days the photos come easier. The light, the moment, or the scene seem to be asking for a photo to be taken.

But for the majority of the days, the ones that are filled with mundane routines and dull skies, those are the ones that I find myself literally walking around the house or down the road looking for any detail or angle that is remotely interesting.

So, if you see me out and about with my eyes to the sky or crouching down near the ground, don’t mind me. I’m just looking for my photo.

While most of my work tends to be with families who have younger children, every once in a while I’m welcomed into a family to photograph a glimpse of teenage life, and there is really something special about them.

My approach shifts quite a bit with teens. They’re so much more camera aware, and the moments that I’m drawn to are completely different (which is interesting to reflect on, but that’s for another day). When things come together and real, unfiltered moments come through, well sure, what more can you ask for.

Incoming!
I’ll be honest, I do get a bit extra excited when I know a family I’m photographing has pets. It adds another interesting family dynamic, relationship and personality, (plus selfishly I just really love giving out extra rubs behind the ears if they are into it).

Thank you for the recent awards for both an individual image and story!

The best part is, I am able to show my family’s how their daily life in both the louder and quieter moments are so beautiful and interesting (and highly talented judges agree!)

We drove down a dirt road and weren’t sure if it was the right place, but as soon as I saw another couple who had binoculars, (and a handful more people over time), I felt a bit more reassured.

While it was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking to witness these birds seemingly moving as one, I equally enjoyed the conversations (as well as the ease of standing in silence) with complete strangers on a Friday evening. For those few moments, our paths overlapped where we all chose to slow down, look up and enjoy nature.

As soon as the birds departed us and went down to rest for the evening, we too departed our separate ways to find our places of rest.
