Early mornings with this lad are always something special.

The low clouds swallow the sunrise, wrapping the world in darkness and silence — but somehow, his presence lights it all up.

Another favourite National Bird of Prey Centre is the Asian Wood Owl

This beautiful owl is found across mature tropical and subtropical forests, from India and Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia and southern China.

While he has no ear tufts, his rich chestnut-brown feathers, pale facial disk, huge dark eyes and striking dark eye rings, makes him a very handsome owl.

But the real showstopper has to be those incredible eyelashes

Meet Damien 🦉

A charming White-Faced Scops Owl in National Bird of Prey Centre

Native to the savannas and woodlands south of the Sahara, these tiny African owls may look calm and curious — but they’re full of personality. 🌍✨

White-Faced Scops Owls are closely related to the American Screech Owls, and you can hear the family resemblance in their call: a long, haunting trill that echoes through the night. 🌙

Small in size, big in character

Over the years, photography has taught me one thing that applies to every genre:

Know your subject.

Whether it’s sport — knowing the players, reading the game, anticipating the next move.

Or landscape — knowing the location, understanding how the light falls at sunrise or sunset, learning the tides and conditions.

That knowledge always leads to a more meaningful photograph.

Wildlife is no different.

There’s a difference between a photo of something and a photo about something.

Years of early mornings spent with Mr Fox have built more than opportunities for photos — they’ve built trust. I’ve learned to read his movements and understand his moods. I know when he’s relaxed enough to sit comfortably in my company, and when he’s uneasy after hearing a dog bark in the distance. I know not to make sudden movements. I know when it’s time to leave and give him space.

And I know he’s truly content when he starts to nod off… just like he is here.

Moments like this are never taken for granted.

5:15am on a Saturday and I’m out the door in search of Mr Fox 🦊📸

As I jumped in the car, the sky was already turning shades of red, so I made an unplanned detour to capture a timelapse of an incredible sunrise unfolding. All the while thinking… I need to get down to the fox before he disappears for his post-hunt nap.

By the time I arrived, I thought I’d missed my chance. Then, right on cue, he appeared.
For the next 10 minutes, Mr Fox stayed close by, calmly posing against the backdrop of a still glowing morning sky. Moments like these are why early starts are always worth it.
Nature rewards patience. 🌅🦊✨

🎶 Song Thrush 🎶

One of our most familiar and beloved songbirds, the Song Thrush is about the size of a Blackbird, with warm brown upperparts and a creamy buff chest covered in bold, arrow-shaped black spots. Look closely and you’ll spot its pale pinkish-grey legs as it bounds across the ground searching for worms and snails.

This beautiful singer was giving its heart and soul along the River Nanny last week — its rich, far-carrying song echoing through the trees. This is a recording of it singing that morning. A true rival to the Blackbird when it comes to birdsong. 🐦✨

🍽️ Feeds on worms, insects and snails — often smashing snail shells against stones known as “thrush anvils”.

🏡 Breeds across Ireland in hedgerows and gardens, nesting in trees, bushes and ivy.

A small bird with a mighty voice. 💛

The Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) — Ireland’s largest seabird, boasting an incredible wingspan of up to 2 metres 🌊🕊️

These striking birds go through a remarkable transformation as they mature: juveniles begin life with darker speckled plumage before developing the iconic white body, black-tipped wings, and soft yellow-tinged head of adulthood.

Gannet chicks are known as “gugas” in Scotland, where they have traditionally been hunted — a practice many hope will soon come to an end.

Famous for their dramatic hunting style, gannets plunge into the sea at breathtaking speeds to catch fish beneath the surface 🎣

Ireland is home to several important breeding colonies, including Little Skellig, Bull Rock, and Ireland’s Eye — but pictured here is one of my personal favourites: the spectacular Great Saltee 🏝️

Bank Holiday weekend and few hours spent yesterday in Avoca for a spot of lunch and some Red Kite observation.

This one decided to photobomb the church steeple.
