Celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week…

When I first put the call out for families to share their breastfeeding stories in Bainne Cíche, there was almost zero response from women of colour.

The lack of response received may have been influenced by where I asked or how I asked…

…but it also speaks to the disparities in breastfeeding rates for Black women…

Which, in turn, highlights differences in care Black women receive antenatally, postnatally, and in general.

I extended my call for breastfeeding representation from women of colour via newspaper articles and radio interviews.

And I am so grateful to have Chioma’s story to share, as well as stories from other women of colour.

Representation matters. 🖤🤎🧡💛🤍

I wanted Bainne Cíche to be inclusive…

This meant collecting stories from families who had faced many different experiences, but had the common thread of human milk. 🤱🍼

And while the stories varied, there were so many to which I could personally relate. 📖

Like Darcy’s, where an autoimmune condition left her hospitalised and separated from her newborn baby. 🏥

This photo isn’t hers, it’s mine.

Taken during a hospitalisation for severe, crippling adenomyosis.🎗️

So often, when we see mothers, we don’t truly see them.🧍‍♀️

We don’t know what they are going through…

The pains they face, the battles they fight in silence, or the triumphs that they celebrate alone. 🏆

But my hope is that, through the stories in Bainne Cíche, mothers and families will feel seen, celebrated, understood, and not so alone.

While the Rest of the World Closed Down…

I got to work!

This is a screenshot of my calendar for the month of June 2020… and the months that followed resembled it, too.

Cv*d altered my original plan to interview and photograph storytellers in person.

And, truthfully?

I’m glad it did.

Despite my education in psychology and background in facilitating therapeutic groups…

I underestimated just how cathartic people would feel by telling their stories to someone who truly wanted to listen.

Stories in which abuse, loss, abandonment, feelings of failure, inadequacy, and more were expressed…

Holding interviews over Zoom gave these women, their partners, and other contributing family members a safe space to share, feel, and experience release.

Many had never shared their stories - nor the sometimes heavy weight of them - with anyone.

Over 80 hours (if not closer to 100) were spent listening, asking questions of, and learning from these amazing storytellers.

And I feel incredibly privileged to have been the keeper and now the bearer of them, because I know women, partners, and families around the world will feel helped, healed, and validated through each and every story shared within the pages of Bainne Cíche!

I didn’t know at the time just how much history was being captured in this one photograph.

The day this photo was taken… 📸

I was celebrating six months of breastfeeding my second child… 🤱👶🏼

…and had also made the decision to cut and donate my hair to The Rapunzel Foundation. 💇🏼‍♀️🎀

While at the salon, just as my hair was being shampooed, I heard someone say that the first case of Cv*d had been reported in Ireland. 💆🏼‍♀️😷

No one could fully grasp in the moment what that meant or what it would come to mean. 🏥🧑‍⚕️

Shortly after, almost all businesses were closed and in-person activities banned. 🔐❤️‍🩹

Gardaí stood in roads, halting traffic, asking travelers where they were going. ✋👮‍♂️

It was as if we were in some kind of strange time-warp, a glitch in the vortex. ⏳🌀

We waited… we watched… ⚠️👀

…and I knew I needed to come up with a new plan if work on Bainne Cíche was to continue. 📖🤱

And now, years later, I am delighted to share more about this book series’ creation as we count down to the first volume’s release.

When I set out on the journey to create Bainne Cíche: Stories of Breastfeeding Ireland…

…the world, as we knew it, looked very different. 🌍

My husband and I had just welcomed our second child a few months prior… 🎀

…and it was during a night feed with her that I felt called to create a book of breastfeeding stories. 📖 🤱

That was December 2019.

I could never have anticipated that just as I’d put the call out for participants and started connecting with potential storytellers…

The world would shut down and my plans to travel Ireland, interviewing and photographing incredible families, would be put on hold indefinity. 🏥🩺

The creation of Bainne Cíche is a saga in itself… 🌀

…one that has spanned more than five years and multiple countries! 5️⃣🛩️🌎

And I am so excited to share more about each step along the way as we count down to the first volume’s release.
