It was an honour meeting Chris Droney back in January 2018, when he kindly allowed me to record a fascinating and insightful conversation with him as part of the 'Landscape as Witness' project. It was the first conversation that I recorded during my time spent in North Clare, and Chris couldn't have made the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Although we only met on a handful of occasions, his generosity, openness, and hospitality left a lasting impression on me. May he rest in peace.

Legendary concertina player Chris Droney has passed away, at the age of 95.

The Bellharbour native had been renowned across Ireland and abroad as an outstanding ambassador for Irish traditional music for several decades now.

Chris was the figurehead of the Droney family, which is renowned in music circles, with son Francis and daughter Ann, while many of his grandchildren continue the family tradition.

In 2012, Chris Droney was named as Clare Person of the Year while two years later he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement honour at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards. In 2018, he was bestowed with the annual MORGlor award.

In Clare, however, he will be best known as one of the most enduring and beloved figures in traditional music circles.

May he rest in peace.

6.30 PM • LANDSCAPE AS WITNESS

Join us for this fascinating talk and slideshow by Wicklow photographer Seán Laoide-Kemp. After spending a year travelling, photographing and interviewing natives of the Burren, Seán has created a stunning series of photographs exploring and documenting the landscape and tragic history of the Famine through the Public Work Scheme constructions that were built around North Clare during the period. Be prepared to immerse yourself in a timeless and heartbreakingly evocative landscape that still resonates with echoes of this extraordinary period in Irish history.

7.15 PM • SNAPSHOTS OF GREYSTONES PAST

Greystones Players actors deliver a series of dramatic readings of pieces from the newspapers that will provide entertaining glimpses and insights into the town’s 19th and early 20th century history and social life, illustrated by photographs of the time and interspersed with songs of the period performed by the wonderfully talented Jade Phoenix accompanied by Brendan Kennedy.

8 PM • OPEN DRAMA WORKSHOP

If you’re aged 14 to 18, you’re invited to join in the fun and games at an Open Drama Workshop with the Whale’s own Making Waves Youth Theatre. Be prepared to let your hair down or simply watch and enjoy the dynamic group at work in this lively sample drama workshop facilitated by actor, writer and director Ciarán Coogan.

8.45 PM • PORTABLE ESCAPE ROOM

Engage your brain and sleuthing talents and make up a team for Fourfront Games’ launch of their exciting new Portable Escape Room! Or (if you promise to be quiet), you can watch a group of people use teamwork and creative thinking to solve the challenge.

9 PM • MUSIC GENERATION’S ELEVATION PROJECT

It’s music and song all the way. First up are the creative talents of Music Generation's Elevation Project, a collaboration of young singers and instrumentalists from across the county over 14 weeks this year. This inspiring project invited young Wicklow musicians to work on arrangements, improvisation and experimentation in different music styles and to compose their own original songs.

NICOLAAS WALLE & BAND

fter which we have the formidable talents of the phenomenal Greystones Battle of the Bands winner Nicolaas Walle and his band. At just 19 and currently a student at IADT, multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer Nicolaas has already produced two albums, performed at Dun Laoghaire’s Summer of Music and is certainly destined to make his mark well beyond Wicklow. His talented band includes Sam Shepard (Drums), Emily Lannin (Vocals) and Jack Joyce (Guitar/Bass).

A series of 20-minute videos capture the minute changes that occur in the landscape over a short space of time, contrasting with those that have taken place over the past 170 years. Attached is a 10-second clip overlooking the Carron Turlough, a 'disappearing lake' in Co. Clare.
