We recently got some nice photos on the Diamond Hill hike in Connemara National Park,

Diamond Hill also known as Binn Guaire (Hill of Guaire), is named after the legendary King Guaire of Connacht who also lends his name to Dunguaire castle in Kinvara

The area got its anglicized name as the rock is quartzite, when it rains and the sun shines on the hill the rock sparkles like a diamond.

This scenic trail offers breathtaking views of Kylemore Abbey, Inishbofin, Clare Island, Achill Island, Croagh Patrick, and the majestic 12 Bens.

A must-visit for nature lovers and photographers

The swim went ahead on Sunday morning Aug 23rd leaving Inis Oirr beach and took 6hrs 12 mins to get to Fanore covering nearly 17km.

The winds were against us (myself and the boat crew) the whole way but light, the day was lovely, it was a great adventure. The skipper Collette Furey did a great job in holding a line for me to follow and the mental support from the crew Annette, Brian, Donnacha, and Brigit were greatly appreciated

Thinking about buying a new pair of binoculars but not sure where to start?

With so many different sizes, magnifications, designs and features available, choosing the right binoculars can be a little confusing.

That’s why we’ve put together our new Binoculars Buyer’s Guide at Galway Camera Shop.

In the guide, we explain what those numbers like 8x42 and 10x50 actually mean, the difference between roof prism and Porro prism binoculars, why optical coatings matter, and what to look for in terms of build quality, comfort and performance.

We also take a look at image-stabilised, night vision and marine binoculars, as well as when a monocular or spotting scope might be the better choice.

Whether you're into birdwatching, wildlife, travel, sport or simply enjoying the outdoors, our guide will help you understand what to look for before you buy.

Read the full guide on the Galway Camera Shop website.

Why Buy a Spotting Scope?

Want to get closer to the action without leaving your living room? A spotting scope could be the perfect addition to your viewing setup.

Spotting scopes offer significantly higher magnification than binoculars, with some models reaching up to 70x magnification. This makes them ideal for taking a closer look at distant landscapes, wildlife, birds, boats, buildings and much more.

Another major advantage is the larger objective lens. With options such as an 80mm objective lens, a spotting scope can gather more light, helping you enjoy a brighter, clearer view — particularly when observing distant subjects or in changing light conditions.

If you’re lucky enough to have an amazing view from your living room, a spotting scope can transform it into your own personal viewing point. Whether you’re watching wildlife, scanning the coastline or simply enjoying the landscape, there’s a whole lot more to discover.

For the best experience, spotting scopes should be used with a sturdy tripod. We recommend the Slik Pro 400DX or Dorr Pro Black 3XL for a stable, comfortable viewing setup.

Ready to see further? Pop into Galway Camera Shops and discover what a spotting scope can bring into view.

For these shots, we got some compositions of the street and tried to crowds, expressions, movement, colour and characters that make street photography so exciting.

Using a bridging camera with a good telephoto lens for this style of photography is particularly useful. It allowed us to work from a distance and capture natural, candid moments without interrupting what was happening around me. It also helped compress the busy streets and bring individual moments into focus

Few things will be too far away for the black PowerShot SX740 HS Digital Camera from Canon. Boasting a 20.3MP CMOS sensor and 40x optical zoom, this all-in-one point-and-shoot can capture things near and far. Helping the far end of its 24-960mm zoom range (35mm equivalent) is optical image stabilization which keeps your photos sharp and in focus. Canon's DIGIC 8 Image Processor helps the camera keep up with your shooting, allowing for 10-fps continuous shooting with AF lock on.

The 20.3MP sensor is also capable of 4K video and 4K time-lapse recording. Framing for videos and photos can be done via the 3.0" LCD screen on the rear of the device, which can tilt 180° for selfies. Inis Oírr to Fanore Solo Skins Swim 2026

After having to move our swim from July, we’re delighted to be back in the water this August for the Inis Oírr to Fanore Solo Skins Swim!

This swim is about more than taking on a challenge — it’s about raising awareness and much-needed funds for Galway Autism Partnership, who do fantastic work supporting autistic people and families across Galway.

Every donation, big or small, helps support the valuable work they do and makes a real difference to families in our community. We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported the swim so far, and we’d love your help as we take on this challenge in August.

If you’d like to support the cause, tap the link on this reel and head over to our iDonate page

Thank you for all the encouragement, support and generosity.
