Johanna King - Family Photographer Dublin Award-winning documentary family photographer & educator based in Dublin, Ireland. I capture (extra)ordinary moments for families both in photographs and video.

When I photograph a family, my ultimate goal is to capture those fleeting moments you want to hold onto and arrange them in a beautiful heirloom album for you to treasure and then transmit to your children. The achievements I take the most pride in are putting little ones and big ones at ease and creating images that couples and families want to enlarge and hang over their sofa.

A selection of my favourite black & white photos over the years.

Joy. Reflection. Connection. Legacy. Tenderness. Routines. Features. Personalities. Growth.

All these children have grown SO MUCH since. And it's bittersweet.

This morning, as I was cleaning my phone, I came across an old video of my kids. (Did you know that WhatsApp stores all the media you ever sent and received in a 'hidden' folder. No wonder it fills up our phones.)

The video brought tears to my eyes. I had 100% forgotten about that moment of him being scared of goats.

I have nearly forgotten who my son was before turning into a strong-willed 3-year-old.

This parenting ride isn't easy, is it?

And I'm grateful to be able to revisit the years when they were small.

While I don't pose and direct during my sessions, this doesn't mean I don't get some cute portraits of your children.

A story told in photographs is similar to a story told with words. You want to see the full picture, with portraits, moments, details and the environment as well.

It's such a privilege for me to be trusted to tell your story. I don't take your trust for granted, and I use it to capture the essence of who your kids are at this stage in your life.

These were taken during a 2-hour photo session in June. They had time to have breakfast, play indoors, play outdoors, and the result is a collection of images that tells the story of their family welcoming a new baby after a recent move to a new house.

I did it! Started a podcast.

I've probably been thinking about it for 5 years. Stopped myself from doing it because I didn't have the time or capacity for a podcast that would be scripted/polished/edited.

So instead, I'm going to do a more low-pressure podcast. Imperfect, but hopefully engaging and useful.

The little stories within the big story.

When I come to photograph a new baby, I don't just photograph the new baby.

Of course, I will get as many photos of their cute tiny features, from head to toes. But these are only a part of what life with a newborn feels like.

And that feeling, well, it will be widely different for each family. No situation is the same, and so the photos will tell their particular story.

In this instance, this new baby is coming home to a house with two big brothers, a dog and loving parents who are trying to finish renovating a house.

I always hope that my photographs will bring back the feelings, and they will get to remember the little stories within the big story such as always putting shoes on the wrong foot, asking for "daddy's milk" or even crying for nappy change.

Newborn photography sessions are sooo special. And I believe they're even more special when they capture a story: a home, loved ones, pets, unfinished rooms.

This is what was, they'll never remember it, but you can show them later.

And of course, we still get beautiful photos of your new baby.

Your home doesn't need to be perfect.

Your kids don't need to behave.

I understand these worries, but the beauty of my photo sessions is that they're not about things being "picture-perfect" and controlled. They're not about having the perfect plan and things going as expected.

They're about life! And life (especially with small kids) is unpredictable.

Focusing on the kind of memories you want to capture, or what you'd like to feel when seeing the images 10 years from now... THIS is what matters.
