Brilliant Idea
I would be confident in saying that most Irish adults have quite a vocabulary of words and sentences but cannot actually put these together to speak the language. Most who would have gone through the Irish schools system here would have a fairly good understanding of the language when they hear it spoken, picking up bits and pieces of sentences.
However, they get embarrassed when someone starts to speak Irish and they can’t respond, no one wants to look stupid in that situation. To avoid this situation we have found protection mechanisms such as, I only have a “Cúpla focail” and quickly turn and walk away or change the subject. But it is still a bit hurtful in your heart that you cannot reply after all the years of trying to learn our Irish language, feeling a bit of a failure.
So here is the simple plan to get us all speaking Irish to each other:
We fund, Native Irish language Teachers to teach Irish adults FREE Irish Conversational Irish language classes all over Ireland on a continuous basis for at least three years.
It is my belief that within twelve months of these classes the children learning Irish in school and the adults outside would be able to interact with each other. The Irish language would then be a language we could be proud of with greater communication in the home and unite us in a common goal to better our country.
This plan would be strictly for people who have gone through the Irish language system in schools and found themselves frustrated with a “Cúpla focail ” and cannot speak the language after all that time.
These courses would not be Irish beginner language courses.
So I suggest we set up a funding structure, we can do this ourselves. If it was well organised we could certainly bring this change about. We could hold gigs and concerts, get organisations involved, form groups in our communities and so on.
So if you think this is a good idea contact me and let me know how you would like to get involved.
No begrudgers please, if you have nothing good to say: "NO COMMENT" would be best.
