Sunset at Baldungan in North Dublin

The weather didn't quite play ball yesterday evening but it a little bit of colour in the sky made it worth getting out for.

Blue hour from Dún Laoghaire Harbour.

While sunsets often steal the show, the blue hour that follows can be just as rewarding for photographers. At the start of blue hour, the sky can still glow with lingering oranges, pinks and reds from the sunset, while deeper shades of blue begin to emerge overhead.

This mix of warm and cool tones creates some of the most beautiful light of the day. Reflections become softer, colours feel richer, and the balanced light makes it easier to capture detail across the scene without the harsh contrast of daylight.

After a particularly vibrant sunset, these colours can linger for quite some time, transforming the harbour into a calm and atmospheric landscape. It's one of my favourite times to be out with the camera, when the day's final colours slowly fade and the evening takes over.

Sometimes the best part of a sunset is what comes after.

The Northern Lights over Dublin - a collection of some of my favourite aurora photographs from the past few years.

These images were captured on different nights around Dublin, each one a reminder of just how incredible our skies can be when the conditions align.

Taken a few weeks ago on a calm morning at Portmarnock Beach, just as the first light of day broke over the horizon. As the sun climbed into the sky, the waves rolled in, catching the golden light and glistening in the morning light.

Milky Way Over Drumanagh & Loughshinny

Another rare clearing last week in North Dublin allowed the Milky Way to shine through, revealing just enough detail to capture its beauty. North Dublin skies aren’t exactly known for being clear, but patience, timing, and stacking can still reveal something magical.

This image was captured at Drumanagh near Loughshinny during blue hour, using a single stack of 10 x 15-second exposures for the sky alongside a separate foreground exposure. The Milky Way detail was extracted using my usual workflow: stacking in Starry Landscape Stacker, initial processing in Lightroom (and this time Siril), followed by final refinement and foreground blending in Photoshop.

Even with light pollution and occasional low cloud along the horizon, the image still managed to reveal part of the Milky Way core glowing above the coastline, a small glimpse of our galaxy rising over North Dublin.

Capturing night skies near urban areas is always a challenge, but that’s part of what makes it rewarding. Looking at the back of the camera on the night, you never really know if you’ve captured enough detail. It’s only once the stacking and edits begin that you find out whether the conditions, effort, and late night were worth it.

One of the biggest challenges in modern astrophotography (apart from clouds) is the amount of traffic in the night sky.

Every line in these images is either an aircraft or satellite passing through the frame during exposure.

For a single image, it’s annoying.
For stacked panoramas like this, it can become a nightmare.

My latest Milky Way panorama was built from 50+ exposures, and nearly every panel had multiple light trails crossing through it. Most can be removed during stacking, but some still need to be manually cleaned frame by frame afterwards.

And with Starlink continuing to increase its satellite count, it’s only going to get worse.

A few years ago you could shoot for minutes without seeing a single satellite. Now it’s rare to capture a completely clean frame, especially during summer nights.

The sky is slowly becoming more crowded, and for astrophotographers, it may become even worse than the clouds.

Swipe through some of the raw(ish) frames before major editing or cleanup.

Behind the shot -> My latest Milky Way panorama broken down into 3 main steps:

• Capture - Planning the composition, shooting 5 untracked panels, and capturing multiple exposures for each section of the sky.

• Stack, align & merge - Each panel was stacked to reduce noise and bring out more detail before merging everything into a seamless panorama.

• Final edits - Colour grading, contrast, foreground blending, brightness adjustments, and the final finishing touches to bring the scene to life.

Swipe through to see the full process from raw files to the final image.
