𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒁𝒐𝒏𝒆: 𝑨 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒕 & 𝑩𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒐𝒏𝒔

Sometimes as a photographer, you find yourself wanting to look at a familiar place through a completely different lens.

On a recent trip down to Lough Swilly Marina in County Donegal, I stopped by the weathered wooden remains of the old Fahan Pier. Most people passing by see a rugged, decaying structure set against the dramatic, sharp backdrop of the water and surrounding hills. But this time, I wanted to strip away the clutter of the scene and focus purely on form, mood, and stillness.

I decided to try my hand at a fine art style using a long exposure and a blended horizon. By smoothing out the water and merging the sky into the sea, the sharp line that usually divides the world vanishes. The water and sky melt into a seamless, atmospheric grey canvas, leaving only the dark, silent timber posts anchored in space.

It creates a dreamlike, minimalist image, almost like a painting.
I know fine art minimalism like this isn't to everyone’s taste. Many prefer the sharp, vibrant contrast of a classic sunset or the dramatic pop of a coastline in full color. Removing the horizon line can feel unusual, even a little disorienting, because it removes the sense of scale and ground we usually rely on.

For me, though, that’s where the magic lies. It slows everything down and lets you appreciate the history in the worn timber, standing silent and still against the calm.

It’s definitely a bit of a departure from my usual style, but it’s always rewarding to experiment with new techniques. I’d love to know what you think, is this minimalist style something you enjoy, or do you prefer the classic, sharp coastal vistas? Let me know in the comments!

Tucked deep within Banagher Glen Nature Reserve, Altnaheglish Reservoir/Banagher Dam feel like a hidden world. Surrounded by ancient oak woodland, lush pine forests, and the quiet swell of the Sperrin Mountains, it’s one of those spots where engineering and raw natural beauty meet in complete tranquility.

The walk up through the glen follows the roaring Altnaheglish River, making the eventual view of the curved concrete dam structure and calm, mirror-like waters all the more striking when you reach the top. Under a moody, overcast autumn sky, the stillness up here is incredible.

𝙊𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙐𝙥𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙂𝙡𝙚𝙣
Some places feel less like geography and more like a scene from a storybook. 📚✨

Walking through Banagher Glen, I found this little lane. With its deep, mossy banks and a carpet of russet leaves, it seemed to lead right out of the everyday world. And then there was this old wooden gate, holding back the sunshine in the meadow. It’s impossible not to stop and wonder about all the stories it has silently witnessed.

It’s just a little old gate, but doesn't it make you want to open it and see where the path leads next? What lies just beyond? 🤔

𝑳𝒊𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝑾𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝑹𝒐𝒄𝒌𝒔 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉
There’s a unique kind of patience that comes with landscape and aerial photography. You find your spot early, get set up, and then you wait.

For hours, White Rocks was draped in that soft, overcast light, beautiful in its own quiet way, but you’re always watching the horizon, hoping for that one brief moment where the sky decides to open up.

Just when it felt like the light was done for the evening, the clouds broke over the Atlantic, and the entire coastline lit up in a wave of warm, liquid gold.

Launching the drone into that sudden burst of light gave a whole new perspective on a familiar shore. From up here, you can really see the incredible sweep of the white limestone cliffs carving their way toward Portrush, with the gentle swell of the waves catching the sunset glow all the way down the beach.

It’s moments like this that remind you why standing around in the cold wind, waiting on the off-chance of a sunset, is always worth every single minute.

☀️ Holding onto the light...

As the days draw in and the first proper bite of winter is here, my thoughts are drifting back to this perfect, golden evening. 🌅

I snapped this at White Rocks, Portrush, when the sun was painting everything in gold and the air was warm. It feels like another world now! But looking at it makes me smile and reminds me that the warmth and light always come back.

For now, I'm ready for the cozy side of winter: the big jumpers, the crackling fires, and the rich, dark evenings. But this little slice of summer is my beacon to get through the coldest months.
