A one-day symposium in the Augustinian Friary (St. Mary’s Abbey), Ballyhaunis, on Saturday, 22nd Aug. 2026 brings together what is known of its founding and early history.

Established for the Augustinian friars by the local ruling family of MacSiúrtáin Dubh (Jordan) circa 1400 AD, few early records of their Ballyhaunis foundation survive, and only some of its original architecture is now immediately evident. Insights into its history through the 15th and 16th centuries may be had by looking at the early history of the Augustinian friars in Ireland, and what is known of this and their eight other Connacht houses.

At this inaugural event, four specialists in medieval history and architecture consider how and why the friars came here, the history of their order which came to Ireland in the late 1200s, how their friaries were built and arranged, and the interaction between them and the faithful to whom they ministered.

This is the first in a series of annual symposia which will share the history of the Ballyhaunis Friary through its six centuries’ continuous existence, advancing further through the centuries each year. Next year will focus on the effects of the Reformation and the turbulent 17th century on the Ballyhaunis foundation and the Augustinian friars in Connacht.

A representative from Mayo County Council will also give a brief presentation on the Conservation Plan for the church, on which work has just commenced.

The Friary Ballyhaunis
“Foundations of a Friary”
A one-day symposium exploring the founding and pre-reformation history of the Augustinian Friary (St. Mary’s Abbey), Ballyhaunis, with four guest speakers.
It is the first in a series of annual symposia which collectively will uncover and share the rich history and legacy of this unique foundation.
This event will take place on Saturday, 22nd August 2026 from 9.30am-4.00pm.
Light lunch included 12.30pm-1.30pm.
