ANNAGH 2026 – WEDDING PHOTOS

Material is currently being gathered and prepared for ‘Annagh 2026’, the forty-ninth edition of the Ballyhaunis annual parish magazine. Articles, club reports and photographs are being accepted for inclusion. A very popular feature each year is the Gallery of Wedding Photographs. If you, a family member, or friend with Ballyhaunis connections, got married in the past year, Annagh would be delighted to include a wedding photograph in the upcoming issue. An appeal is made also to secretaries and PROs of local clubs and organisations to make sure reports and photographs are submitted in good time.

Material may be emailed to [email protected] or given to any committee member: Tommy Caulfield, Noreen Ruane Dalton, John Kilduff, Jim Lundon, Edward Mulhern, Seamus Mulrennan, Nell Rochford, Mike Griffin, Gabriel Smith and Paul Waldron.

The deadline for material is Friday, 16th Oct. 2026, just over four weeks away, but plenty of time to put pen to paper or root out those photographs you would like to share.

Due to the pressure on printing works as Christmas approaches, it is vital that material be submitted before the deadline.

A one-day symposium in the Augustinian Friary (St. Mary’s Abbey), Ballyhaunis, on Saturday, 22nd Aug. 2026 brings together what is known of its founding and early history.

Established for the Augustinian friars by the local ruling family of MacSiúrtáin Dubh (Jordan) circa 1400 AD, few early records of their Ballyhaunis foundation survive, and only some of its original architecture is now immediately evident. Insights into its history through the 15th and 16th centuries may be had by looking at the early history of the Augustinian friars in Ireland, and what is known of this and their eight other Connacht houses.

At this inaugural event, four specialists in medieval history and architecture consider how and why the friars came here, the history of their order which came to Ireland in the late 1200s, how their friaries were built and arranged, and the interaction between them and the faithful to whom they ministered.

This is the first in a series of annual symposia which will share the history of the Ballyhaunis Friary through its six centuries’ continuous existence, advancing further through the centuries each year. Next year will focus on the effects of the Reformation and the turbulent 17th century on the Ballyhaunis foundation and the Augustinian friars in Connacht.

A representative from Mayo County Council will also give a brief presentation on the Conservation Plan for the church, on which work has just commenced.
