This morning on our daily walk, the pooches and I turned right where we usually turn left, and found ourselves all alone on a beautiful beach. While I’m spending my days preparing for conversations about feminism, migration, medical miracles and the public understanding of science at this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2026 (only two weeks to go!), I’m so grateful that I can also hang out on the beach, feeling the sun on my face and the gratitude in my heart. 💕

Losing loved ones is awful, but I’m so grateful that we were able to fly to Brisbane to be with family and commemorate the boys’ grandfather’s long and amazing life. I hope he’s up there somewhere, laughing his infectious laugh and feeling proud of the legacy he left behind. RIP Peter. 💕

What a week it’s been…

On Friday AI billionaires warned us that the technology they’ve created might just kill us all within the decade. (But it’s OK, they said, because first it will create some great companies. Phew.)

On Monday my father-in-law died in Australia after a long and amazing life.

On Tuesday an international artist capitulated to tyranny in a way that might just spark the revolution. Silver linings, eh?

On Thursday my best Bali friend’s father died suddenly. He was way too young. I’m heartbroken for her, and devastated by her devastation.

As Juliana Hatfield famously sang, “A heart that hurts is a heart that works.” I’m happy to report that my heart is apparently in excellent working order. 💔💕

It’s one of those days when I so wish I’d taken my good camera out on my daily dog walk…

How lucky we are that the beautiful people of Bali allow us to share their island home and witness their beautiful culture. I’ll never stop being grateful for this stunning opportunity. 💕

I love going to open-mic poetry nights and hearing other people’s wonderful words, witnessing their bravery as they get on stage to share them. I’ve attended many times, sitting appreciatively in the audience. But I finally had to acknowledge that if you’re going to greedily consume other people’s creativity, it’s only right that you should contribute by having the courage to share some of your own.

So last night I stood on the stage at the Indus Supper Club event that was brilliantly MC’d by Michael M. Clements for Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2026, and read my poem, “Kiss the Hand”.

This is a long video - at 3.5 minutes, it won’t be promoted by IG, and I don’t expect many people will watch it - but I wanted to leave it here as a reminder to myself that I should feel the fear and do it anyway. Words are the tools by which I understand the lives of other people, and I want to thank them for their generosity by also asking that they carefully cradle some of mine. 💕
