One of the most unique wildlife experiences in Nairobi is getting eye-to-eye with giraffes at the Giraffe Centre.

The centre was established by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife to protect the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. Visitors can climb the wooden platform and feed the giraffes by hand while learning about conservation efforts to protect this incredible species.

It’s an unforgettable stop for anyone visiting Nairobi and one of the best places in the world to see giraffes up close.

Yes, that’s “Nemo”! Also known as a false clownfish. The anemone looks like a Magnificent Sea Anemone which is a common host species for false clownfish especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

Do you know why anemones fold up like that sometimes? Here are a few reasons:

🐠Protection: Anemones contract to shield themselves from strong currents, sediment, or disturbance.
🐠Stress Response: Folding can indicate stress from changes in light, temperature, or salinity.
🐠Digestion or Waste: They sometimes fold while digesting food or expelling waste.
🐠Clownfish Activity: Movement from resident clownfish can trigger a temporary contraction.

Grocery store produce can never compete! 🍆🍍🫑🍉
There’s just something about farmers markets — the colors, the chaos, the flavor — that makes you wonder why we ever settled for shrink-wrapped tomatoes.

Support local, eat fresh, and always stop to admire the veggies. 😍

An unexpected gem in old Colombo 🌺
Tucked away in the winding streets of the old town, this vibrant Hindu temple caught us completely by surprise. Every inch is covered in color and stories, with the modern Lotus Tower peeking over the skyline behind it — a perfect snapshot of the layers of history and culture in this city. 🛕🌆🇱🇰

“We are never at the finish line of understanding. There is always something about life and the universe that we are still to discover. That has been the ultimate lesson for me. That at any moment along the line of our existence it can branch off. We get so used to it going in a straight line that we believe that is all life is, and then, suddenly, it twists or turns or takes a sudden right angle.” - The Impossible Life

So, with this quote in mind, I will spend less time worrying about the sudden twist our lives have taken and more time focusing on all there is about life and the universe that we are still to discover and how beautiful it is. *Look closely at the second picture and note the fish with imperfect stripes…he is my favorite!

While diving at a wreck near the Great Basses Reef in Sri Lanka, I spent at least 10 minutes following this school of blue-striped snappers around, admiring their beautiful yellow color (my favorite) and seemingly effortless group movements.

We had not planned on diving with a saltwater croc! 😬🫣😱Our dive unexpectedly ended a bit early when the boatman spotted a saltwater crocodile in the water above our dive site…scary!

Earlier this week my son turned 12, so we let him skip school to complete his last dive for his Junior Advanced Open Water Certification. He had completed all the requirements last year except for the final that required him to be 12. Near the end of our first dive another instructor came down to find us and we were told to end the dive and go to the surface. When we got to the surface we were told that the boatman had spotted a saltwater croc and we needed to get out of the water right away.

Saltwater crocs are common in the estuaries and lagoons of Colombo, but it is uncommon for them to end up this far out in the ocean. This one must have come down one of the many lagoon river exits into the ocean and been swept out with a current. The croc was clearly disoriented and tired and while we were watching it from the boat a group of fishermen came and tried to lasso it…quickly turning the situation into a Sri Lankan crocodile 🐊 rodeo! 😂

Note: the photos at the end were shared later in the day when the wildlife service caught the crocodile and brought it back to shore. I can only hope that they relocated back to the wild!
