I'm not a video person, maybe in the future.. This short video of Sipadan 2019 shows a encounter with a scalloped hammerhead that I wanted to share! As a recreational diver, doing normally only one full day of diving at Sipadan, you have to be very lucky for such an encounter. These hammerheads school in groups and are usually at 90 meters in this area, but now and then a scout is send up to check out what they sense from below.

Last time here was in 2011, visiting Sipadan as a day trip. It’s good to see that the area is still under strict projection and for that reason it remained a world class diving site full of marine life to my opinion. On the other hand, (diving)tourism grow a lot and is a very big industry putting a footprint at nature, visual on the ‘not protected’ surroundings. Still I believe that this huge diving income can help the area if the government will also put strict rules on the amount of resorts in its surroundings and provide education about nature preservation.
Staying on Mabul Island is for above reasons a bit contradicting, but a very pleasant place to be. Together with my wife and friends we could see how the Bajau (sea gypsies) live here, there lifestyle is deeply intertwined with the sea, but it can be harsh.
Diving around Mabul is beautiful, lots of macro live and a nice dive spot ‘seaventures’ just in front of you. It’s an old oil rig converted to a ‘divers resort’. Kapalai is the third point of the famous Golden Triangle, with Sipadan and Mabul being the other two. Kapalai is more a sandbar and holds also some artificial reefs and structures attracting lots and lots of different marine life. It is home to ‘Elvis’ an enormous Moray. Top location. Sipadan is Sipadan, when spending time in the blue at depth; we were surprised by a short visit of a Hammerhead scout saying hi…trilled.

Together with my wife, who shares the same passion, we went for diving at Cozumel. We did 13 dives. Visibility was not optimal that week due to the weather conditions, the dive sites however are very magical and have beautiful formed coral formations.

Cozumel is a teardrop-shaped coral island, formed by a limestone plateau of 392 square km. Called Ah-Cuzamil-Peten (Land of Swallows) by its earliest inhabitants, Cozumel has been a favorite destination for divers since 1961, when Jacques Yves Cousteau´s documentary broadcast Cozumel´s glorious sea life to the world. Cozumel is Mexico largest island and the oldest in the Caribbean group. The island is separated from the mainland by a channel only 19km wide. The Cozumel reef system is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world. Even though almost the entire island of Cozumel is surrounded by coral reefs, the park only encompasses the reefs on the south side of the island. It begins just south of the International Pier and continues down and around Punta Sur and up just a small portion of the east side of the island. Cozumel is home to the Cozumel Splendid toadfish (Sanopus splendidus) which is listed as vulnerable by IUCN and is entirely endemic to the reefs surrounding the island. It has more than 30 dive sites from which the majority are situated in this marine park (Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park).

During this trip I’ve been diving (6 dives) around the Northern Gili’s of Lombok Indonesia and some snorkelling in the south Gili’s, the secret islands for which Gili Layer is the most interesting of the group.
The islands got a beating after el Nino in 1997-1998, but most damage was done by fishing with dynamite and cyanide. Unfortunately still clearly visual here. Gili Eco Trust, created in 2000, is there to protect the coral reefs from destructive fishing around the 3 islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air). The coral in the south islands, nicknamed 'secret islands', are in better shape.

Tijdens mijn vakantie (juli 2016) bezocht ik de Perhentian eilanden waar ik, tussen het relaxen door, maar 3 duikjes heb gemaakt. De Perhentians bestaan uit het grote eiland Perhentian Besar en het kleine Perhentian Kecil en het is gelegen aan de noordoostzijde van het schiereiland Maleisië. De onderwaterwereld in dit gebied is beschermd (Terengganu Marine Park), dat is een goede zaak, maar 's avonds tijdens de BBQ staat er wel gewoon o.a. Haai op het menu :-(.

Ik kwam erachter dat ik 5 jaar geleden toch wel verwend was tijdens het duiken bij Sipadan (Borneo, Maleisië). Het duiken hier (Kecil eiland) is redelijk toeristisch, mede ook door de vele snorkeltripjes in het hoogseizoen. Kort om, er was wat minder groot spul aanwezig. Rif haaien zijn toch net iets meer verlegen voor ons dan wij voor hen :-).
Snorkelen vanuit "Long Beach" is erg de moeite waard, dit omdat de kustlijn redelijk ondiep is. Het duiken was hier verrassend voordelig (~17 euro per duik incl. materiaal etc.), zeker vergeleken met Sipadan.

In 2010 stond Bonaire op de planning. Een fantastische duiklocatie niet alleen om de mooie onderwaterwereld, maar wat mij betreft ook om de super relaxte sfeer. Het is een klein eiland en daardoor is alles natuurlijk makkelijk toegankelijk. Alles ligt om de hoek…
Huur een pick-up, duikmateriaal in de bak, parkeren op het strand en plonzen maar waar en wanneer je wilt. Het wanneer was dan ook wat mij goed is bijgebleven….nachtduiken. Duiken als de zon bijna ondergaat en genieten van het onderwaterleven dat een totaal andere kant van zich laat zien. Roofdieren zijn ’s nachts actief en laten zich nu wel zien. De vele Tarpons maakten dankbaar gebruik van onze lichtbundels om de jacht iets succesvoller te maken. Het zijn flinke zilverkleurige vissen die wel 2.5 meter kunnen worden. Als je op de schubben schijnt is het net een discobal….en als je op een ander slapend/rustend visje scheen, dan duurde het geen 10 seconden …. weg visje …. en een voorbij flitsende discobal in de vorm van een onderwaterraket.
Gewapend met een goede duiklamp (volle accu), backup lamp, externe flitser op de camera, blijft het toch altijd een beetje mysterieus en spannend om in het donker te duiken. Het vergt ook meer voorbereiding en controle tijdens het duiken zelf, maar het blijft mijn nummer 1 duikspecialty.
Het maken van foto’s gaat ook erg goed, bijschijnen met de pilot lamp, scherpstellen en flitsen maar. Geen zorgen maken om de witbalans, gewoon instellen op flitslicht en op elke diepte goede foto’s maken. De sluitertijd kan ook laag gehouden worden door het vele flitslicht, hierdoor heb je minder last van bewegingsonscherpte.

In 2011, tijdens een rondreis door hoofdzakelijk het Borneo gedeelte van Maleisië, lag er een top duikbestemming binnen handbereid; Sipadan! Het wordt gezien als de mooiste duikspot van Maleisië, en als één van de mooiste duikplekken ter wereld.
Sipadan is een tropisch eiland ten oosten van Tawau in Maleisië gelegen in de Celebeszee samen met Pulau Mabul en Pulau Kapalai in de deelstaat Sabah.
Sipadan is een enorme pilaar van ruim 600 meter diep met een klein atol dat boven het water uitsteekt. De pilaar dient als schuilplaats voor veel zeedieren en vissoorten. Rondom de pilaar zwemmen enorme aantallen vissen; vooral grote scholen pelagische soorten (grote vissen die in open zee leven). Er zijn slechts een paar plaatsen in de wereld met een dergelijke concentratie zeeschildpadden; je hebt er vooral veel soepschildpadden en karetschildpadden.
Het wordt redelijk beschermd en duiken gaat op basis van een vergunning waar een maximum aantal duikers aan vast zit.
Ik maakte hier 3 duiken, ‘Barracuda point’ (walldive), ‘Mid Reef’ en ‘Turtle cave’. De stroming was fors en veel foto’s heb ik niet gemaakt. Wel een aantal filmpjes, alhoewel dat niet mijn ding is, maar wel leuk als herinnering.
Tijdens het duiken heb ik zeker meer dan 10 verschillende schilpadden geteld en o.a. een hele grote tonijn (onderwater raket), een joekel van een tandbaars en een aantal witpuntrifhaaien. Ook een aantal Barracuda’s een groepje eenhoornvissen en een hele grote schol makrelen.

In dit jaar haalde ik mijn PADI Open Water Brevet en heb ik op Malta mijn 5e en 6e buitenwaterduik aan mijn logboek kunnen toevoegen.

Het was wel mijn 1e fotoduik, maar was vooral bezig om mijn drijfvermogen (trimmen) in de gaten te houden :-).

De 1e duikstek heette "Cirkewwa - The Madonna". In het begin van een smalle grot staat een klein zwart beeldje van ´The Madonna´. De 2e duikstek was genaamd "Anchor Bay Cave/Popeye Village" en had een mooie grot op ongeveer 8 meter waarin je in het totale donker kunt opstijgen naar de 'oppervlakte' (zaklampje mee dus).

Het onderwaterleven mag dan niet zo kleurrijk zijn als in de tropische wateren, er viel toch genoeg te zien!

Nadat mijn allereerste digitale camera (nu een zeer antieke FujiFilm FinePix4700 ZOOM) goed was bevallen, kocht ik een FinePix F11 met WP-FXF10 onderwaterhuis. Een fijn klein toestel, maar zonder enige handmatige instellingen.
