Eyes of a Nomad

Eyes of a Nomad Eyes of a Nomad is a blog and photography business Hi everyone, my name is Emilio, I'm a 27-year-old Australian guy living & working in beautiful Bali.

I split my time between Eyes of a Nomad and as co-founder of Institute of Code. Photography has always been a passion in my life, starting when I was a toddler, grabbing my father’s camera, emptying his entire roll of film aimlessly in a few short minutes and loving every minute of it. However, it wasn’t until I began to travel the world that my love for capturing a fraction of a second, something

breathtakingly beautiful or a little crazy became an obsession. Since then, I have been working towards taking a passion and forming it into more of a career. As I move towards my goal, I'm hoping to document the transition through my blog, looking at the highs and lows that come with such a dramatic career shift and just the adventure that is life. If you find my work captivating, emotive and fun and would like to work with me, come on an adventure or just have a beer, then drop me a line here.

Welcome to Bintan, a little and somewhat unknown island off the coast of Singapore. Part of the vast Indonesian archipelago, its rich in culture, history and mind blowing landscapes!

We have been shooting for a luxury hotel here as an on-going contract, starting before they opened and now into its opening phase.

Our team has become somewhat know for our ability to shoot under-construction, not yet open resorts and high end hotels and make it look finished and polished.

We do this through a combination of careful planning, styling (generally prop based when under construction), selective angles and a little dusting of photoshop magic to bring it all together.

About the shot:

Palm trees, white sand and ocean, cant be that hard to shoot right?

Well, if you asked me that now, I would agree, but if you asked me when i took this photo, i would have said “oooof, this is gonna take a lot of post processing work”.

The resort was still under construction, we only had 2x day beds to work with, and the sand was still being graded, so while the resort now looks pretty much exactly like this (water is probs a tad greener), we didn’t have a lot to work with at the time…

For who have followed me for a while or for those that have scrolled down to past posts, you will have seen that I shot a lot of landscapes, often with a model in the frame - I love landscapes and I love shooting fashion & portraits of people.

So I wanted to continue that feeling but give myself some more breathing room for the shots that I posted, so I’m planning to share both a landscape shot and a close up shot with talent after it. A way of blending my love for those closer more intimate shots of talent and the environment they are in with wider landscape shots - rounding out the story if you will.

Will I stick to this, we shall see, but i hope you enjoy this new format 🤙🏼

About the shot:

Part of a larger job for the beautiful - our team has been working with the Vela team since its launch and couldn’t be more proud of the work we have produced, often carrying out multi day trips organising everything from shot planning, to model management and wardrobe to ensure we capture Vela in all of her glory and tell her story.

It’s jobs like this that bring a smile to my face and continue to push my team and I to reach for new heights. Go out and do something you love, it will only end in good things 🙌🏼

Thankyou to for being amazing as always and to our team at for going above and beyond every.single.time 💪🏼

Meet Vela, she’s a 164ft sailing phinisi and we have had the great pleasure of capturing her lines & journey through the waters of Indonesia from the very beginning.

- - see pinned comment to read a little story about this shot - - 👀

Shooting on yachts is demanding, not only are we chasing the best light, from sunrise to sunset, in an unpredictable environment but we’re also trying to capture all the beautiful elements that a guest would not only see but feel and enjoy while being on Vela.

Thats why it has always been so important to have the right crew for the job, from the pre-production styling and model selection to the somewhat mundane task of steaming the styling and running the props around the yacht - everyone plays an important part in getting the job done.

Our students often ask what the difference is between shooting as an influencer/travel creator compared to a commercial photographer & while both create beautiful work, there are so many tiny details that are demanded from a commercial photographer, that might be overlooked by someone who is not in the industry - after spending a long time in the former world I can tell you that working in the commercial space requires considerably more planning & an eye for detail, especially in the areas that not always so obvious.

For example, when creating our shot list, we need to consider marketing principles and needs, not everything can be shot vertical for the gram, they might need content for print advertising or the website. We need to think about what elements of the yacht or the journey need to be captured, some shots might be quite simple, not flashy but critical to selling the experience to guests and they need to be executed with precision, not just as an after thought.

I could go on with so many more examples and as I post more content i’ll share more little snippets of behind the scenes and what its like to shoot in this space.

Hey there, long time no see 👋🏼

Took a short hiatus from the gram to work on a few life things – well a lot of life things really, and by short I mean 3 years 😂

For those that are still following me or the ones that unfollowed & found your way back (thanks for the vote of confidence 😅), you will undoubtedly find things have shifted a bit here, still the same guy, but want to take you on a new journey with my work.

But before we jump into that, lets do a quick re-cap on life:

• Still live in beautiful Bali, yes it’s amazing, end of story

• I run a bootcamp that teaches photography, web-dev & marketing, its called & while’s it been a HUGE labor of love, seeing my students succeed is all I need

• I have a creative agency

• I’m building a photography studio, and it’s gotten a bit out of hand. I suppose that’s what happens when you put a creative/perfectionist in charge of construction in a place where anything you dream up can be brought to life — whether it’s redesigning the building halfway through the project or making our own paint from scratch we definitely haven’t done things the easy way 😅 but I’m proud of the way it’s all coming together. Opening in a couple of months, stay tuned Bali peeps.

So what to expect here now that you are all caught up – mostly a change in the type of content. A big part of this break from insta was because I was no longer really shooting the insta content you see when you scroll down. Our creative agency has been pushing hard, growing fast & figuring out its place in the market focusing on luxury travel & experiences (think 5-star hotels, yachts & adventures)

It’s been a wild ride to get here & it’s like no other work i’ve done before, & I feel like its a world not many get to see, so I’m excited to share it with you.
So expect to see some of the beautiful locations around the world that we shoot at, BTS of running a creative agency & launching a photography studio in Bali.

Japan is going off right now and while sadly this isn’t me posting live from there, it is a good reminder to get planning for next year!

If you have the opportunity to visit Japan, seriously DO IT! Still one of my top ever destinations 🙌🏼

We did most of it in a car and I highly recommend it over a train especially if you want to explore some of the more hidden and remote places, it’s so easy to get around once you have a set of wheels!

Exploring waterfalls and releasing new courses.

Over the past five years I’ve absolutely loved teaching people with little to no experience how to start a career in photography.

It’s brought me so much joy working with absolute beginners, and creating zero-to-hero programs that help them take incredible photos, land their first paid photography jobs and navigate that first tricky year of business.

But as my photography business has grown, and the challenges and opportunities I’ve faced have evolved too, I’ve been craving going deeper - sharing my experience with photographers who are already in the industry but want to take their business to the level.

How to take that leap from landing clients, to being booked out with your dream clients. To scale from “omg I can’t believe I’m getting paid for my photography” to hitting 10k months (and beyond). To streamline your operations and processes to actually love your business again.

So behind the scenes, I’ve been working for the past few months on a brand new advanced business of photography course - for photographers looking to scale their profits and systemize their business.

It’s a curated combination of online lessons, practical activities (like refining your positioning, revamping your portfolio website and more) and a 6-month coaching program.

It will be opening for enrollment soon, so if you’re curious about what will be included in the program head to the link in my bio and get yourself on the waitlist 🙌🏼

P.S. to my Bali bootcamp students joining me in a few weeks, you’ll be guaranteed access to the business bootcamp at no extra cost 🙌🏼

Getting creative with colors in the backyard - nothing like just playing around for fun to see what’s possible!

Believe it or not these were shot on a phone, with just a few quick tweaks using Lightroom mobile - and I’ll be honest I missed my camera and the flexibility it gives me go capture exactly what I want - adjusting the shutter speed, aperture & ISO in harmony to play with motion and depth of field - at the end of the day, even the most advanced phones are still sporting a tiny sensor and rely heavily on digital enhancement to bridge its physical limitations.

But it’s also just a great reminder that the essentials of photography - composition, lighting, color theory, posing etc are what really make a great image. Don’t let your gear (or lack of it) hold you back if you want to pursue photography, either as a passion or as a business!

Are you team phone photography or Professional camera?

Did you hear the exciting news? Japan is opening back up for general tourism on the 11th of October and boy am I excited!

Japan was the last major trip we did just before the pandemic and looking back at these images gets me so excited to head back next year. Perhaps a cheeky ski trip is in order 🏂🏽

P.S. we over at are sharing some exciting news about our brand spankin' new course built for photographers wanting to scale their business, as well as a virtual info night (shoot me a DM if you want early access) 🌴
