Happy New Year!

2025 was a year of diving in Dahab and Tulamben, Bali. Hopefully, 2026 will bring me just as much joy and pleasure with diving and underwater photography. No special trips planned this year. So I will focus more on my roots and dive more in “our” Oosterschelde again. The challenging conditions in our waters have given me the drive to experiment more again. Now let’s just hope that the weather gods are kind to us this year!

Happy holidays for everyone!

Hidden among the arms of a crinoid — a tiny masterpiece of stripes and spines. Sometimes you just have to pause and look closely to spot this true master of camouflage.

The new calendar for 2026 will soon be available in my webshop. It’s the ideal gift for Christmas or New Year’s. And you’ll be supporting a good cause, because part of the proceeds will go to Good Carma (), an organization dedicated to raising money to support cancer research.

Sometimes it feels like you’re photographing a creature from a dream. This nudibranch — barely a few centimeters long — slowly glided across a colony of hydroids. Its body was almost transparent, with delicate veins and glowing cerata.

With the backlight and a shadowed corner of the reef, I captured exactly the floating, otherworldly effect I was hoping for. No rush, no current — just focus, silence, and steady breathing.

Sometimes it’s not the species that guides you — it’s the light.
This nudibranch was barely 2 cm long, but the mix of its translucent textures, the blue background, and the subtle backlight turned it into a magical moment.

The biggest challenge? Finding the right angle without stirring up the sand. One wrong move, and the entire shot is gone — literally clouded.

Sometimes you don’t need colors or close-ups — just scale, light, and silence.

The USAT Liberty is without a doubt one of the most iconic shipwrecks in the world — and certainly the most accessible.

The American transport ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Lombok in 1942. Heavily damaged, the Liberty was towed toward Tulamben, where it eventually ran aground. It wasn’t until 1963, after the eruption of Mount Agung, that the wreck was pushed into the sea by landslides… where it still rests today, a monument beneath the waves.

📸 In the photo: my wife Ellen, hovering beside the ship’s massive structure.

During a gentle dive, this graceful sea turtle glided into my frame, posing perfectly above the reef. The light fell beautifully across her scales and patterns, while the endless blue in the background made the contrast even stronger.

Moments like this take timing, positioning — and above all — respect for their space. This encounter felt like a gift.

The rhinophores of a nudibranch: its “nose” and its charm.

For this shot, I deliberately chose a very shallow depth of field — everything revolves around the shape, color, and texture of those iconic sensory tentacles. They’re delicate, sensitive, and incredibly photogenic… if you can get them in focus.

Two tiny showstoppers in full display.
These Hingebeak Shrimps look as if they were drawn with a fine marker — their pattern almost has an Aztec feel to it.

They’re barely 3 cm long, but with the right angle, a contrasting background, and a little luck, they explode out of your viewfinder.
