Talking about Chinese New Year, many interesting things take center stage. Among them is of course the Barongsai tradition. Barongsai is a traditional Chinese dance using a sarong that resembles a lion. The lion dance has a history of thousands of years. The first time this dance was held was in the third century BC, during the Chin Dynasty.
In the past Lion Dancers had to be invited in from neighboring countries; now Indonesia should be proud, because it has Liong Dragon and Lion Dance craftsmen who are already famed worldwide. A great figure is Lilik Hambali, a Lion Dance and Liong Dragon craftsman in the Chinatown area, Jalan Suryakencana, Bogor City, West Java.
Starting a business in the year 2000, the workshop turns out products not only reaching from Sabang to Merauke but also succeeding in going international, to markets such as Germany and Saudi Arabia. Lilik, who now serves as deputy chairman of the Barongsai Art Group (GKB) in Bogor City, admitted that he studied the making of Lion Dance and Liong Dragons by himself. Starting as a Liong player, Lilik then tried to repair the old Liong Dragon that belonged to a Chinese descent in Suryakencana.
Now he sells a set of Barongsai for IDR 5 million, while the Liong Dragon goes for around IDR 7.5 million. In normal times, Lilik can sell up to 100 sets a year. However, he admitted that during the ongoing pandemic, his turnover had dropped dramatically, by 50%.
Now, in addition to being a Barongsai and Liong Dragon craftsman, Lilik is also a trainer in the Liong Dragon Dance and has won 4th place in the world competition in Surabaya
